Funeral services for Mr. Troy Lavelle Hammett, age 87 a retired educator from Oak Grove, Louisiana, will be held at 2 PM on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Beulah Baptist Church in the Beulah Community near Oak Grove. Reverend Kenny Herring will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Forest Cemetery in Forest, Louisiana.

Mr. Hammett graduated from Forest High School and continued his education at LSU where he received his bachelor and master degrees in education. He demonstrated his patrotism as he served his country in the Navy during World War II. He proudly returned to Forest High School as a teacher, coach, and principal for 30 years. After retirement he continued in the profession he loved, teaching throughout West Carroll Parish and completing his career of 65 years at the age of 87 in the Adult Education Program. He was a dedicated member of Beulah Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and loved teaching his men's Sunday school class. A most loving family member and friend, he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Tyna Parker Hammett and two brothers, Earl Lee Hammett and Winford Hammett.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou Thomas Hammett of Oak Grove, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Kenneth Herring of Oak Grove; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and James Remedies of West Monroe, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and David Cox of West Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Cheryl Hammett of West Monroe.

He is survived by 10 grandchildren: Meredith Hall, Matthew Herring, Daniel Herring, Andrew Herring, Jessica Card, Lauren Bond, Joshua Remedies, Aaron Remedies, Mary Cox and Sarah Cox; and 11 great grandchildren: Kellan Hall, Jadon Hall, Cailee Hall, Hudson Herring, Davis Herring, Alexa Herring, Addie Card, Aidyn Bond, Britton Bond, Gabriel Bond and Piper Grace Bond.

He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ernestine and S. T. Howell of West Monroe; brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Marjorie Hammett of Monroe, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Sylvia Hammett of Oak Grove; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Hammett of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sister-in-law, Carolyn Chapman and her husband Troy Lee of Rocky Branch, sister-in-law, Myrtle Trusty of Oak Grove, sister-in-law Lucille Thomas of Portland, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are: Matthew Herring, Daniel Herring, Andrew Herring, Joshua Remedies, Aaron Remedies, Calvin Hall, Brian Bond and Adam Card.

Honorary Pallbearers are: Deacons of Beulah Church and Adult Men's Sunday School Class.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 between the hours of 3 to 5 PM; and on Thursday, December 26, 2013 between the hours of 10 AM until 9 PM at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Carter Cox and his staff as well as all of the others who cared for him during this past year.
