Flournoy Guenard Obituary

Flournoy Voelker Guenard

A funeral mass for Mrs. Flournoy Voelker Guenard, 91, will be held at St. Patrick Church in Lake Providence, LA at 11:00am on Monday, August 22, 2016. Father Mark Watson will be officiating.

Flo was born in Texarkana, Arkansas, August 23, 1924, and passed away in Lake Providence, LA on August 3, 2016 in her home. She graduated from LSU in 1944, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Flo worked in the Northeast Louisiana Savings and Loan Association, a business founded by her mother. She was known for her positive outlook, her gracious hospitality, and her lovely soprano voice. She was a member of St. Patrick Church choir and altar society and served on the board of the Byerley House. Flo was a loving grandmother who was extremely proud of her four grandsons. She was delighted to become a great grandmother at the age of 90.

Flo is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Stephen Hortaire Guenard; parents, Frank and Isabel Voelker; brothers, Frank Voelker, Jr. and David Voelker; and sisters, Catherine Cain and Isabel Hathorn.

Survivors include her son, Stephen Guenard and his wife Anne; her daughter, Flossie Gull and her husband Evan; as well as four grandsons, Zackary Guenard and his wife Kristin; John Guenard, Jamie Gull, and David Gull; and her great granddaughter, Imbrie Guenard.

Her family would like to thank her devoted caregivers for providing gentle comfort. They also would like to thank Flo's friends who visited her daily and reported news of Lake Providence, her hometown of 91 years.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church ( Box 351, Lake Providence, LA 71254) or the Byerley House (600 Lake Street, Lake Providence, LA 71254).

Flo Guenard was a wonderful person, kind, generous, funny and, given the right occasion, a gifted storyteller. As a boy, I always felt at home in her house. She was a good and solicitous friend to my parents, particularly during my father's final illness. I also remember with pleasure and great affection visits with my wife Carolyn and our children Dinah and Jacob. Our deepest condolences to Steve and Flossie and their families.
