The gates of Heaven opened to welcome a loyal, faithful servant of The Lord, John Robert Newton, on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 , at the age of 71.
John, formerly from Monroe, was the youngest son of Percy and Gladys Newton. He was a retired Department of Environmental Quality employee. John was the first employee hired when DEQ was originally formed in 1980; served as the administrator of the Air Quality Division and awarded the prestigious Dunbar Award, 1994.
A native of Oak Grove, La. and resident of Pride, LA he is survived by his wife, Johnnie Jones Newton, sons Brian Newton (Melanie), Todd Newton (Jessica) of West Monroe, LA; Scott Jones (Staci) of Baker, LA, and Chad Jones (Jenae) of Pride, LA; brother William W. Newton (Marcia), of Salemn, AR; sisters, Maria Cullever (John), of Houma, LA, Jo Ellen Manley (Herbert), of Monroe, LA, and Sheila Crosby (Rayburn), of Oak Grove, LA, and seven grandchildren, Bailey, Christopher, Haley, Kaelyn, Hayden, Gabriella, Riley, Chase, Emma and Jonathan.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother David Newton.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, Baton Rouge.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home 9595 Florida Blvd. on Friday, November 16, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Greg Manley, Kevin Crosby, Vernon Crawford, Robert Harper, Robert Miller, and John Matthews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Carpenter House.
