Marcus Swayze Obituary

Marcus Desha Swayze

Marcus Desha Swayze, 99, of Monroe, died October 14, 2012 at his home. He was born July 17, 1913 to the late Captain Louis Herbert Swayze and Mildred Turner Swayze. Mr. Swayze graduated from Neville High School and then attended Northeast Center of LSU, and obtained a degree from Louisiana Tech University and a Masters in Fine Arts from Northeast Louisiana University, where he later taught art. He was a gifted professional artist and was the last of the Golden Age comics' artists, having drawn and written the Captain Marvel series from 1941 until his entry into the US Army during World War II.

His gift for music was recognized by his Army commander, who introduced him to Bing Crosby. He then played guitar for Bing Crosby's concerts for the troops. Following his discharge from the army, he returned to Fawcett publications in New York where he resumed work on the Captain Marvel comics. He later returned to his hometown of Monroe and continued his work on several comic strips until he was hired by Olin Matheson to start the art department for their packaging division.

Mr. Swayze married June Bloomer and they raised five children in Monroe. He was elected to the Ouachita Parish School Board, and was Vice Commander of the American Legion; he coached little league baseball and mentored many young people in the fields of art and music.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, June Bloomer Swayze; daughters, Judy Blackman, Desha Swayze and Courtney Eckmann; son, Chris Swayze, M.D.; sons-in-law, John C. Blackman, and Douglas Eckmann; daughter-in-law, Sandra Swayze, M.D.; grandsons, John Tolar III and Matt Murrow; granddaughters, Judith Desha Tolar Thomas and Courtney Rebecca Smith; and great niece, Jan Swayze Curry.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Monroe with Dr. Larry Stafford officiating, on Wednesday October 17, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be immediately prior to the service at 1:00 pm.

Dear June & family. It's been close to 50 yrs since I've seen most of you. My heartfelt condolences on your loss. Marcus coached me one summer in LL Baseball, and I would sometimes play with Marc Jr & the girls at your wonderful home. I didn't realize, at the time, Mr Swayze's past, or his then occupation, even tho I was an amateur comic book collector of sorts. Though Mr Swayze was a special person & celebrity of sorts, he made others (me) feel as though we were somebody. I doubt I can ever forget those wonderful days, & the little bit of time I spent around him & your family, no matter how old I might become. What a wonderful, kind, giving man. God bless you all. From far away, but most Sincerely,
