A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:00 am at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Richard F. Doolin, 81, who passed away Friday, March 21, 2014 at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette.

Visitation was observed at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and resumed Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 8:00 am until the time of services.

A rosary was recited by Father Gilbert Dutel on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the funeral home chapel.

Interment followed in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.

Father Gilbert Dutel of St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Lafayette officiated.

Richard F. Doolin was born Wednesday, August 10, 1932 in Rochester, NY. He was always driven to better himself with a determined positive outlook. At the age of seventeen, he volunteered to serve in the US Army. His enlistment lead him to serve as a Korean Combat Veteran from 1951-1952 as well as a Drill Instructor at Fort Polk from 1952-1953. He was honorably discharged, when he met and married Anna Lee Deshotels. He vigorously pursued and attained his formal education which included an undergraduate degree from USL and Masters and PhD in Special Education from Northeast Louisiana University.

Richard was big-hearted and passionate about working with Special Needs children. He became the Director of Northeast Louisiana Cerebral Palsy School after receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisiana. After receiving his doctorate from Northeast Louisiana University, he served as the Director of Special Education for Lafayette Parish for twenty years. After retirement, he later created his own business to assist families with infants or toddlers with special health care needs.

Richard was survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Anna Lee Deshotels of Lafayette, LA; three sons, William Leonard Doolin, II of Milton, Timothy Richard Doolin and his wife, Julia of Shreveport, Chad Damien Doolin and his fiance Jeanne of Lafayette; two brothers, William Edward Doolin of Rochester, NY and Robert Doolin and his wife Ruth of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Mary Ann Kosta of Rochester, NY; nine grandchildren, Oliver Wrye Doolin, Timothy Patrick Doolin, Christopher David Doolin, Sean Gregory Doolin, Devin Erin Doolin, Liam Benjamin Doolin, Kelleen Bernice Doolin, Alivia Ann Doolin, and Isabella Ann Bourque; one great grandchild Aedan Erin Doolin. Richard was a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and cared dearly for his entire family. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage and also loved his adopted Cajun Heritage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Leonard Doolin and the former Bernice Frances Keeler, both originally of Rochester, NY; brother, Francis Doolin, and grandchild, Kevin Damien Doolin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were made in Richard's name to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675.

The family wished to thank the medical professionals and staffs of Lafayette General Medical Center and Regional Medical Center for the compassionate care given to Richard and his family.
