Albert Donald Obituary

Albert Stringfield Donald, MD

Funeral Services for Albert Stringfield Donald, MD, 82, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at New Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Dupree officiating. Interment will follow in the New Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA.

Dr. Albert S. Donald "Doc" was born in West Monroe, LA to Percy and Irene Donald. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA and Louisiana State University Medical in New Orleans, LA. He was a member of the Lambda Alpha Chi Fraternity. During Medical School he met and married his wife, Dr. Bobbie Jean Vining Donald. Upon graduation, he completed an internship at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, LA. They moved to San Antonio, TX, where he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force at Kelley Air Force Base. In 1962, with two children, they returned to West Monroe, LA, where he began his career as a general practitioner with Dr. Henry Hammonds in Monroe, LA. In 1972, he set up his practice in West Monroe behind Glenwood Hospital, where he worked until his retirement. He served his patients by treating the entire family including delivering thousands of babies and performing surgeries. He was dedicated and diligent. He never missed a day of work, beginning with early morning rounds, a day in the office, surgeries early or at lunch, evening rounds, and an occasional house call. He loved helping others and made his patients feel special with his pet names, squinty grin, and attentiveness.

His family and its history were very important to him, as he built his home on the hill where he was born and grew up. He taught his four children a great work ethic and to go above and beyond for others. He loved hunting, fishing, reading, gardening, and baseball. He loved spending time with his friends and family at the Ol Jack Hunting Club. After he retired, Doc was able to realize his dream by spending an entire hunting season at his camp. Doc found the camp, rivers, lakes and tractors peaceful therapy. His greatest joy in hunting was calling in a turkey. In life, his joy was his family, as he prepared meals, a place to gather and woods for them to enjoy together. He spent his final days surrounded by family and loved ones. As true as the life he lived, he fought and stayed strong until he succumbed to lung cancer.

Albert is preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Drs. J.E. and Edith Smith; brother-in-law, Charles Vining, II; and daughter-in-law, Susan Griffith Donald.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bobbie Jean Donald, M.D.; children, Randy Donald, Donna Donald McGee and husband, Mike, Jeff Donald and wife, Denise, Alana Cooper and husband, Clark; grandchildren, Alan and Michael Donald, Colin Mull and wife, Kelli, Brianna and Madelyn Mull, Skylar and Wolf Donald and Kamden and Coltan Cooper; great-grandchild, Greyson Canady; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Eric Craighead, Brian Craighead, Scott Fordham, Bobby Petrus, Charlie McCain, Curt Chellette, Steve Tippen and Pete Leggett.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Fontaine Emmons, Dr. Clyde Elliott, Wiley Roach, Bobby Russell, Billy Williams, H. Steve Donald, DDS, and Ken Peaker.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, January 8, 2016 at New Chapel Hill Baptist Church.

I loved Dr. Donald! He was always so kind, so thorough with his "doctoring!" I certainly have missed the twinkle in his eyes! His grin always lit up his whole face! He didn't just dispense medicine, but also help & hope. Always left him thinking life would be better soon. Missed him when he retired but was so glad he was able to retire and enjoy his family and his life in the woods. I've often wondered how he was doing. If I had seen the obit I would've come to the church to show my respect, because I certainly had a lot of love & respect for him. What a privilege it must have been to be in his family! May God bless & keep you all as you walk in the light of Doc's legacy as well as the light and strength of God's love.

My very favorite Dr. Of all time! In 1973 he delivered my first child, about a year later after my child had been in the hospital with convulsions, we were released to go home. A couple of days went by and my phone rang....Dr. Donald calling to check on my son and his patient...He cared about his patients. My condolences to the family.

Dr. Donald delivered all three of my children and took wonderful care of our medical needs. They don't make doctors like him anymore. He let us charge our visits and we always paid him or we wouldn't have been able to see a doctor in mine and my husband's younger years. He was a wonderful caring doctor whom will be missed by all. Thank you Dr. Donald for all you did for my family. Prayers for all his family.

I am sorry to hear this wonderful, caring Doctor has died. Dr Donald delivered all 3 of my children. I remember the smile, sparkle in his eyes and squinting of his eyes. He always made his patients feel so special. I remember when I worked in central supply at Glenwood he let me watch him deliver a baby. Special moment to see how he could help the Mother relax and he seemed as happy as the mother with her baby. Dr Donald, there will never be another Dr Donald. I know how much your family and friends will miss you. For your family, I am so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Donald was the one who broke it to me that I was pregnant. He was the one who took care of me and encouraged me the whole way through. He's also the one who looked up at me and grinned, the minute my son was born and said, "Well.... all I did was catch him. Are you still gonna pay me?"

That baby is 37 now, with babies of his own and I still remember that day so clearly. Dr. Donald was a funny, kind and compassionate man and I'm so sorry to learn of his battle with cancer and hope that his passing was peaceful and painless. My prayers are for the family.

January 8, 2016

I am so thankful to have known Doc and to have witnessed the impact he had on so many lives, mine included. It was always a pleasure to see him when I was employed as an RN at GRMC. Always smiling and kind, not only to patients and families but to staff as well. I don't think there was a mean bone in his body! It was an honor and privilege to be able to return a small part of that love by participating in his care and comfort through hospice. May the Father's love and peace surround and fill you, Bobbie, and all your loved ones and friends during this difficult time. What a wonderful legacy he has left.

While attending college in the late 60's, I was an orderly in the Glenwood ER. Doc was the first physician that I really got to know personally. Probably because he spent so much time at Glenwood....seems like he lived there. He was always the same, regardless of the time of day, which included too many early AM hours visits. As someone else said here, that squinty grin of his will never be forgotten. A fine man and fine physicial. My heartfelt condelences to his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with Doc's family. When I worked at GRMC in ER while in high school (mid 70's), Doc let me watch him deliver 2 babies - it was a beautiful moment I've always cherished and will never forget - and I loved the way his eyes would squint when he smiled after each birth. He was a wonderful man who touched many lives and he will be remembered fondly.

January 8, 2016

May you rest in peace, Dr. Donald. You delivered me into this world and was my Doctor until you retired.
