DEEP RIVER - Philip J. Bjornberg, 84, of 60 Main St., Deep River, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Middlesex Hospital, Middletown.

Born in North Haven on Sept. 6, 1929, son of the late Harry John and Frances Amanda Blakeslee Bjornberg. Philip had grown up in North Haven; graduated from Center School; worked as a road driver for Perkins Trucking for 22 years until his retirement and was a member of the Teamsters Local #406. He served his country faithfully in the Connecticut Army National Guard, the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later in the U.S. Marine Corp. A professional baseball player in his earlier years; he played in the Wallingford Twilight League; Lyman Hall Baseball; played for the Brooklyn Dodgers minor league for three years, the All Navy Baseball League and was a member of the Professional Baseball Players Association.

He was the father of Phyllis (the Rev. Timothy) Haut, of Deep River, Ana (Mark) Sanford, of Cheriton, Va., Martha Ellen (Cole Prevost) Bjornberg, of Old Saybrook, Philip (Susan) Bjornberg, Jr., of No. Stonington, Brian Bjornberg, of Deep River; brother of Marilyn Bullis, of Madison, Linda Geary, of Ridgefield, Carol Coleman, of Sonoma, Calif., Ana Kristine Bjornberg, of Arizona and, Roger and Dana Bjornberg, both of Woodbury and the late Doris Harper, Eric and Donald Bjornberg. Also survived by five grandchildren ;and three great-grandchild. Also survived by a dear and loyal companion of over 30 years, Pearl Lukas, of East Hartford.

Funeral services were conducted in the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Saturday, July 12, with his son-in-law the Rev. Timothy Haut officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the North Haven Center Cemetery.
