Piper, Vaughn Joseph "Joe"
Vaughn Joseph "Joe" Piper, age 84, passed away in Montgomery, Alabama on May 26, 2013.
Joe was born on November 1, 1928, in Silver Lake, Indiana to Vaughn E. and Gladys (Smith) Piper. He married Rosella Catherine Long on January 21, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in North Manchester, Indiana. Together they had three children, Gregory, Patrick, and Laura. After his wife of 60 years passed away in 2009, Joe married Mary Margaret (Brandenburg) Coblentz, on May 1, 2010.
Joe graduated from Chester High School in 1946. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and was with the Occupation Forces in Japan at the end of WWII. Following his service, Joe earned his Bachelor's Degree from Manchester College in 1958, and his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois - Champaign in 1960. He accepted his first teaching job in Pomona, California in 1960, and in 1962 Joe became a Professor at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, where he taught in the Mathematics Department until his retirement in 1992. The same year, Joe moved to Homosassa, Florida to enjoy his retirement, where he was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Joe's memory will be cherished by his wife, Mary Margaret Coblentz, Montgomery, Alabama; his three children, Gregory (Ellen) Piper, Patrick (Melody) Piper, Laura (Steven) Gehling; nine grandchildren, Marty Hall, Tim Hall, Courtney (William) Souhrada, Michael (Jessie) Piper, Christina (Jeff) Tritt, Zachary Piper, Max (Britteni) Piper, Daniel (Amy) Gehling, and Kimberly Gehling; eleven great-grandchildren; and brother, Richard (Barbara) Piper of Howe, Indiana.
Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosella (Long) Piper; sister, Donna (Piper) Frieden; and parents, Vaughn E. and Gladys (Smith) Piper.
Joe will be laid to rest at Lake View Memorial Park where a private family service will be held. Friends may call at Lake View Memorial Park in Oshkosh from Noon to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2013, for visitation.

I remember your dad as being both intimidating and funny. But when we are kids, we never get the complexities of our parents, do we? Have good memories of things that we did at Waldwic growing up.
