Gerhardt "Sam" Eggert

Gerhardt "Sam" Eggert, age 87, of Berlin, died peacefully Monday afternoon, October 14, 2013, at home. He was born June 24, 1926, in the Town of Pensaukee, Oconto County, the fifth son to Rev. Paul C. and Irma (Jaeger) Eggert. He was baptized July 25, 1926 and confirmed July 28, 1940 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Abrams, WI.

Sam was a 1943 graduate of Oconto High School and attended Business College in Green Bay in 1944. He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1944 where he served in the infantry in Italy and attended Signal School at Naples before being transferred to the 51st Signal Corp. as a teletype operator. He received an honorable discharge as Sergeant in September 1946. He then returned to Business College in Green Bay to complete the accounting courses.

Later, he moved to Iron Ridge, WI where he worked as accountant for Iron Ridge Co-operative from 1947 until 1952. Sam was united in marriage to Ruth Ladwig on September 30, 1950 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Fairburn, Berlin. He and Ruth moved to Berlin in 1952 where he was an accountant for Mid-Western Sport Togs Division of Berlin Glove Co. Sam was President of Berlin Glove Co. from 1965 until his retirement in 1988. He was treasurer of Ardney Sheepskin Co. in Milwaukee from 1984 until 1999.

Sam enjoyed his summers at "the forty" with family and friends and the winters in Scottsdale, AZ. He was a faithful and active member of St. John Lutheran Church, holding many offices throughout the years. He was a charter member of Berlin Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth Eggert, Berlin; three children, Dr. Gary (Jackie) Eggert, Berlin, Sherry (Dale) Dopp, Jackson, MI, Terri (Gilbert) Tatge, Menomonee Falls; five grandchildren, Heather Dopp, Tyler Dopp, Tara Tatge, Trent Tatge, and Taylor Tatge; three sisters-in-law, Jeannine Eggert, Sturgeon Bay, Annie Ruth Eggert, Tyler, MN, Dorothy Caves, Plainfield, and her husband Bud who was like a brother. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and by four brothers, Karl, Harold, Paul and Rupert.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Berlin with Rev. Bryan G. Lundquist officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Berlin.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home in Berlin and on Saturday at the Church from 12 noon until the time of services. A Memorial has been established for St. John's Mortgage Fund.
