Craig, Richard I.
Richard I. Craig, 87, of Delhi passed away quietly in his sleep Sunday, March 2, 2014. He was born October 23, 1926, the son of Sylvester (Pete) and Lucile (Ream) Craig. He attended Omro Schools, and married Inez Reitz, the love of his life on July 14, 1945. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2010, after almost 65 years of marriage.
Dick was a truck driver and part time farmer all of his life. He was the "C" in C&S Produce for most of his early life. He was owner of Craig Trucking, Inc., and could be found out on his tractor, combine, or lawn mower in his spare time. He was "out standing" in his field. He held various truck driving jobs and logged thousands of miles. He was quite proud of his driving record. He retired from Speed Queen in Ripon, where he worked part time as office equipment maintenance and driver. He was the mechanic's helper and "gopher" for parts for the family business. He loved to travel the back roads; often lingering a little longer at the gravel pits and hot mix plants. He knew every back road in almost every county in Wisconsin. He once went all the way to Wausau for paint. He loved going to the car auctions and would plan his appointments around them. He had the "gift of gab" and could talk to anyone. He always had a story or memory to share. He was the "go-to" guy for any kind of travel questions, routes or directions. He would get the atlas out and find you a route. You could always tell where he was by his whistle. He whistled constantly and was quite good at it. He had a great sense of humor, and shared it right to the end. He was so positive, and made everything you did with him fun.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez; his parents; in-laws; a son, Darhl; a son-in-law, Bob Wipf; brothers, Russell, and David; a sister, Florence; and a brother-in-law, Harold Reitz.
He is survived by one brother, Ollie; a sister-in-law, Nancy Reitz; five children, Paul (Gerrie) Craig, Dennis (Sandy) Craig, Dan (Darlene) Craig, Cyndi Wipf, Patty (Bob) Fink. Eight grandchildren; Matt, Kate, Christine, Andy, Cory, Troy, Chris, and Darla. Seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Waukau United Methodist Church, Hwy 116, Waukau, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Kristen Lowe officiating. Dick will be laid to rest next to his wife at the Waukau Cemetery in a private family ceremony. A memorial has been established.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Home Instead, the loving staff at Fountain View Nursing Home, the compassionate care of Generations Hospice of FDL, the gentle grace of Rev. Kristen Lowe and our prayerful church family at Waukau UM Church.
Dick will be remembered with a whistle and a smile.
