Margaret Hergert

Hergert, Margaret Helen

Margaret Helen Hergert, 90, went to her eternal rest on Jan. 29, 2013 at Elijah's Place. She was born on Dec. 3, 1922. in Cambria, Wis., the daughter of Erich and Meta Albrecht. She was confirmed at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cambria, Wis., on May 16, 1937. She graduated from Cambria High School on May 31, 1940 and went on to attend Oshkosh Business College, where she obtained a degree in accounting. It was in Oshkosh, with a little help from her sister-in-law, Doris Allen, where she met the love of her life, Marvin Hergert. They were married on June 15, 1947, in Cambria, Wis.

In her many years in Oshkosh, Margaret worked as a bookkeeper for a number of different businesses in the Oshkosh area, including Fox River Manufacturing, Perfection Glass Company and finally was the bookkeeper for Hergert Sport Center until her retirement. She was a perfectionist when it came to numbers, a trait that she passed on to her son, Bruce who became a chemical engineer and her son, Philip who became a certified public accountant. She was also a Notary Public for many years and notarized countless drivers' license applications for a fee of $.50. She enjoyed playing cards with her lady's card club and was an accomplished Canasta player. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oshkosh and was a Sunday school teacher there for many years, a testament to her strong Christian faith. In her later years while residing at Gabriel's Villa, she enjoyed playing bingo and earned the reputation as the bingo champion.

Those who really knew Margaret, knew that her family was the most important part of her life. She was the most gentle, caring mother and wife, who had boundless patience for her husband, children and grandchildren. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, and never complained about things that troubled her. She was an excellent homemaker and cook, and on many occasions prepared the old German recipes of Krautkuchen and strawberry dumplings and pizza puppies for the entire family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and never turned down a babysitting request. She loved Tammy and Chloe who were her dogs from years gone by. She was also the best listener you could have as a friend.

She and her husband, Marvin spent considerable time with their daughter, Patricia, in horseback riding activities. Together Marv and Pat competed and won several State and National reining horse competitions. Margaret was always with them and encouraged them even though it really was not her thing. Again, a reflection of her compassionate and caring nature. In her retirement, she and Marv enjoyed dining with the family at the Delta Restaurant and enjoyed many winters together in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Margaret is loved and will be missed by her children, Bruce M (Kathy) Hergert, Butte Des Morts; and Philip E (Mary) Hergert, Oshkosh; brother, Sheridan (Carol) Albrecht, Cambria, Wis.; grandchildren, Nicholas (Amy) Hergert, Lindsay (Zach) Hepner, Kelsey Hergert, Jesse Ann (Philip) Karpowitz, Jennifer Hergert (Lisa), Christine (Andrew) Desch, and Matthew Barney (Chelsi); great-grandchildren, Olivia Karpowitz, Philip Karpowitz III, and Tanner; nieces, Janice Albrecht (Jeff Watson),and Lisa Albrecht (Richard Turpin); and nephew, Allen (Nicole) Albrecht; and son-in-law, David Barney and Nettie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erich and Meta Albrecht; her husband, Marvin Hergert; and her loving daughter, Patricia Ann Barney.

A private memorial service has been held and burial has taken place at Lake View Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Margaret's name by her family.

Margaret's family would like to extend a special thank you to the care givers at Elijah's Place and the Affinity Hospice team for their kindness and the truly excellent care she received.
