Gaynor, John William

John William (Bill) Gaynor, 69 of Oshkosh, died January 19, of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He was born May 4, 1943, in Winston-Salem, N.C., to John and Mary Gaynor. Bill grew up and attended school in Chicago, graduating from Brother Rice High School in 1961. He received a baccalaureate degree in German and history from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the University of Vienna and did post-graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and the Freie University in Berlin, Germany. He was a world traveler who spoke seven languages and loved classical music. He taught foreign languages at Loyola Academy, Wilmette, Ill.; Edgewood Academy, Madison; Lourdes Academy, Oshkosh; Minoqua High School; and, while in the Peace Corps, at Convent High School, Roseau, Dominica. He also taught at Chengdu University, Szechuan Province, China. On retirement, he substitute taught in the Wautoma area. He is survived by Mary Hiles, his former spouse and dear friend; his sister, Sally Tobin (Joe), Gurnee, Ill.; his brother, Dennis (Sandy) Gaynor, Chicago; his niece, Anne Tobin, Los Angeles; his nephew, Kevin Tobin, Gurnee; and his best friend, Larry Kane, Boulder, Co. The family will hold a private memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to Lourdes Academy or the Affinity Hospice Program.
