Grafrath, Evelyn Olson
Evelyn Olson Grafrath of Sarasota, Florida, age 97, completed life's journey on December 28, 2013 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Grafrath was born April 26, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Ole Marcuson and Clara (Solin) Olson. Evelyn grew up in Siren, Wisconsin during the depression and graduated from Consolidated High School in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. She graduated from the Minneapolis Business College after which she worked in Minneapolis as Executive Secretary to the Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America.
Evelyn married Robert Paul Grafrath on December 21, 1946 in the Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church Chapel in Minneapolis. Her husband preceded her in death in March 2000. In 1947 she moved with her new husband to Kansas City. They lived in Sorel, Quebec, Canada for two years during the Korean War when her husband was a Lt. Commander in the Navy. Upon returning to Kansas City, she worked so her husband could start his Point Of Purchase Advertising Business at 6th & McGee in downtown Kansas City. After raising her children she worked in the family business for many years.
She was mother to two children, Christina "Chrys" (Mrs. Douglas W. Hyde) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Boca Grande, Florida and Thomas Milton, who preceded her in death in June 1998. Her surviving family also includes her grandchildren, Leah Kirkland of Olathe, Kansas and William Robert Grafrath (wife Gabrielle) of Sherman, Texas and Andrew Hyde of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Sarah Hyde of Chicago, Illinois, as well as six great grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.
Evelyn enjoyed a long and varied association with the Leawood Women's Club since joining in 1965, holding most offices including President (1991-92), Treasurer, and Director of the Art Appreciation Group.
Evelyn was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kansas and a graduate of the Disciple Bible Study group. She was a Girl Scout co-leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Evelyn enjoyed the arts including her membership as a Friend of Art at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Symphony, and The Kansas City Repertory Theater, as well as making arts and crafts, needle pointing, playing bridge and crossword puzzles.
Evelyn and her husband were great travelers. When their children were growing up the family visited nearly every state. As the years progressed their passion for travel took the couple to nearly every continent.
In 2004, Evelyn moved from Leawood, Kansas to Sarasota, Florida to be closer to her daughter. She enjoyed living at The Glenridge Life Fulfilling Community.
Evelyn will be remembered as a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother and friend to many.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at Asbury United Methodist Church, 7500 Nall Avenue, Prairie Village, Kansas on Saturday, January 4 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at the Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri at a later date.
