Merlin D. Halle, age 95, died December 15, 2013, in Oshkosh, WI. Merlin was born on October 15, 1918, and grew up on a farm near North Fond du Lac during the Great Depression. After graduating from North Fond du Lac High School, he worked for the Wisconsin Conservation Department in Kettle Moraine and the Capitol building in Madison. Merl volunteered on December 8. 1941, serving in the U.S. Army until 1946; he rose rapidly from Private to Major. Merl graduated from Oshkosh Teachers College in 1950, and received his postgraduate degree from the University of Illinois in 1960. He taught mathematics in high schools in Seymour and Fond du Lac until 1957. From1957 till his retirement in 1984 Merl taught at the Campus School and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Merl's retirement pleasures included visiting his Florida home, listening to music, working crossword and SuDoku puzzles, playing chess and cards, watching the
Packers and "hanging out." He'll be remembered by family and friends for his embellished storytelling and generosity to philanthropies.
Merl is survived by his sisters, Doris Knoespel and Marian (Chester) Possin; children, Jan (Jerry) Wagner, Hank Halle and Wendy (John) Carlson; and grandchildren, Rachel (Jeremy) Zitzow and Thomas Carlson. Merl was preceded in death by his dear son, Mark Halle. His family thanks Tom and Patty Beck, and family for their friendship, kindness and care to Merl.
Visitation for Merl will be held Monday, January 6, 2014, at Bethel Home Chapel, 225 N. Eagle St., Oshkosh, at 12:30 p.m. until the memorial service at 1:30 p.m. followed by military honors.
