Thomas E. Hughes, beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, age 75, of Oshkosh, passed away at Milwaukee St. Luke Medical Center on Thursday evening, March 27, 2014. Born on September 10, 1938, in Oshkosh, the son of Henry and Dorothy (Callahan) Hughes, Thomas married Barbara Brandt on November 17, 1962, in Oshkosh.
A graduate of Oshkosh High School, Thomas went onto school at his beloved Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and earned a Law Degree from Marquette Law School in 1963. After graduation he went to work as an attorney with his father, Henry Hughes, a former Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge. Following the death of his father, Thomas continued his career with his own law firm, Hughes, Mathewson, Carns, and Slatery for over 30 years.
Thomas loved laughter, a good joke, and story- telling. He was the patriarch of the family and taught all of them to be full of love, spirit, and adventure. Cherishing his family above all else, no words could ever cover the magic and joy he showed his family. Through example, Thomas taught those close to him that love was more important than anything of the tangibles that life has to offer. It is with this simple message that you are invited to help celebrate the life of a dear friend, husband, father, and grandfather.
Mourning his passing is his wife of 52 years, Barbara Hughes; children, Elizabeth (Christopher) Hickok of Orono, Minnesota, Debora (Christopher) Rohrer of Orono, Minnesota, and Henry (Nicole) Hughes of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Jessica, Christopher, and Helena Hickok; Vivian, Thomas, and Ellery Rohrer; Spencer and Reese Hughes; and two brothers, Robert Hughes of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Patrick Hughes of Neptune, New Jersey. Thomas is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Hughes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, St. Peter Catholic Church, 435 High Ave. Private family interment will follow the service.
