Nichter, Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa Nichter, age 81 of Auroraville, rural Berlin, passed peacefully on Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2014 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family and the love of our Lord.

Maria was born on December 16, 1932 in Neibsheim, Germany. She was the daughter of Anton and Anna (Schafer) Kraut. Maria left her home village in December, 1953 on an adventure to Calgary, Alberta, Canada to meet her fiancé, Johann (John) Nichter who emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1951 for a new life and opportunity after World War II. He worked many jobs and saved enough money to send for his bride. John and Maria were married on December 20, 1953. They recently celebrated their 60th. wedding anniversary.

Maria and John moved to Milwaukee in 1958. In 1968 they moved to West Bloomfield, where they were dairy farmers and started Nichter Construction. Maria would often manage the milking and field work while John was out on a concrete job. Maria and John raised Haflinger horses. You would see them and their team of horses at local fairs, exhibitions, and wedding events. Many friends were made during their decades long horse breeding and trading. In 1990 they retired to a farmette in Auroraville, where they continued to raise Haflinger horses. In retirement, Maria and John traveled extensively in the U.S., Germany, and Europe. Whatever John did, where ever John went, Maria was at his side.

Maria was a woman of presence, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, singing, and her faith community. Maria was an excellent cook and baker. She invited all in and no one ever left her kitchen table hungry!

Survivors include her husband John; daughter Monica and son-in-law Loren Becker; son Gary and daughter-in-law Kathy and granddaughter Olivia; granddaughter Erica and her husband Dan Neal and great grandsons Jonathan and Andrew Neal and granddaughter Jessica and her husband Brian Kaehny.
