Lornie enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 5, 1943 and served his country in the South Pacific in WW II as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Oshkosh and was employed at Rockwell International until his retirement in 1987 after 40 years of service. He was a proud member of UAW 291. Lornie married Jeanette "Jay" Phelps in 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. He greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting, especially with his dogs, and was an avid golfer. He always had a big garden and liked working in it and doing all yard work. Bird watching and feeding birds along with many hours spent in his recliner reading newspapers, watching tv, especially NFL football and golf. Most of all he loved his favorite lap cat sitting with him. Some of his best memories were taking his grandsons on vacations during their summer vacations, deer hunting with his son and grandsons, lots of card playing nights at his son's home and going on long trips with his son and family. In April of 2011, he took another trip to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight, which he thought was one of the best experiences of his life. Lornie looked forward to early morning coffee every day to visit with waitress and friends and to afternoon visits with his friends at the Stadium Bar.
