Benjamin Sheaffer Obituary

Sheaffer. Dr. Benjamin Long

Dr. Benjamin Long Sheaffer, 82, passed away unexpectedly, on Sept. 10, 2012, in Beaufort, S.C.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1929, in Lancaster, Penn., to Benjamin Leon Sheaffer and Dorothy Dietzel.

Ben graduated from Purdue with a B.S., a M.S., and a Ph.D in engineering. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps being honorably discharged as a captain.

Ben married Lorraine Capra and they had three daughters, Annice (Kevin) Burns and children, Joshua (Michelle) Warner, Jeremiah (Catlin) Capra, Kristy Capra, and Jeremy Plewa; a daughter, Karen Sheaffer; a daughter, Sandy (James) Nechkash and her children, Richard Daniels, Cheyene and Dakota Nechkash; and a great-grandson, Noah Capra. Ben married Jane Balthazor and had a son, Ben (Jackie) Sheaffer, and their children, Sophia and Benjamin.

He currently holds 21 patents for Mercury Marine, where he worked for over 30 years. He was a longtime member of SAE and was working at XMDI in Beaufort, S.C., at the time of his death.

He is survived by two sisters, Susie (Steve McCallister), Deleware; and Dottie, California; and a brother, Paul (Betty), Pennsylvania.

We will miss him terribly, especially his sense of humor and kindness.

A memorial service with military rites will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 East Division Street, Fond du Lac. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday from 3 p.m. until the time of service.

In Ben's Oshkosh days, we spent many an enjoyable evening socializing, going to Badger games and working together as attorney/client. While we did not see each other often in recent years, I will always cherish the memories of the times we had together. He enriched the experiences and memories of all who knew him and he will be missed.
