Welk, Leone L.

Leone L. Welk, 95, of Berlin, died peacefully on February 28, 2013, at Juliette Manor of Berlin.

She was born on a farm east of Redgranite, on September 8, 1917, the daughter of Martin and Tillie (Drover) Wendt. She was educated in Berlin, graduating with the Berlin High School class of 1935.

As a teenager, Leone modeled for O'Connell's Clothiers, and worked for Russell Mocassin Company, both of Berlin. While working as a housekeeper for the Malcolm family in Green Lake, she met her future husband, Arland Welk. They married in Dubuque, Iowa on November 19, 1938. Their adventure started by moving to Philadelphia when "R" was called to work in the shipyards, leaving Leone to take a job with Standard Oil, and proudly became an air raid warden near the shipyards. They worked their way back to Berlin, after spending time in Beloit. Upon returning, they became the first mangers of the Edgewater Apartments on Mound Street in Berlin. They enjoyed living there and always lent a helping hand to all the other residents.

Although they never had children of their own, they doted on their nieces and nephews, who became a large part of their lives.

R and Leone shared 47 years together before R's death on March 1, 1985, and are now reunited after spending 28 years and 364 days apart.

Leone is survived by her brother, James (Ruth Ann) Wendt, of Berlin; nieces, Glenne (James) McMonigal, Janet (Kent) Blazer, nephew, Fred (Mary) Winkoske, all of their children, and their families, plus have touched the hearts of many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, dear husband R, brother Florian "Schwartz", his wife Beryl, and sister Marie Winkoske, her husband Ed.

Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday morning, March 6, 2013, from 9 until 10:45 a.m. at the Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home of Berlin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday morning, March 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church of Berlin. The Very Rev. Jerome Maksvytis will be officiating. Burial will follow at Dartford Cemetery of Green Lake, Wisconsin.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Brown Wilcox and Juliette Manor for taking such loving care of Leone.
