Grant, James H.
James (Jim) Grant, 73, Oshkosh, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.
Jim was born in Lake Nabagamon, Wis., on June 7, 1940, to James and Nancy (Barnes) Grant. The day after his 17th birthday, he joined the Navy, serving on the USS Kleinsmith until an honorable discharge in June 1961 after four years of service.
Jim married Susan Haidlinger of Oshkosh, on Aug. 31, 1959, in a joint ceremony with his best friend, Dale Smith and Gloria (Dettlaff) Smith. Jim and Sue were wed 54 years and had four children, including James A. (Rhonda) Grant, Milwaukee; Kathleen Grant, Oshkosh; Michele Thomas, Omro; and Terri Texeira, West Allis, Wis., who preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 2009. Also preceding Jim in death were his brothers, Gary and Richard Grant; and sisters, Anita Heling, Pat Berger and Nancy Garner; and son-in-law, Cash Roberts.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sue; his children, Jim, Kathy and Michele; grandchildren, Amanda Texeira, Shane (Eliza) Fitzsimmons, Ryan Thomas (U.S. Navy), Patrick (Samantha) Thomas, David Thomas, Omro; and Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons. Jim was "PaPa' to his great-grandchildren, to include, Leila, Xaylen, Elliana, James, Calise, Katherine, Hayden and Annabelle; and his "little buddy and shadow', Dominick Texeira. Jim is also survived by a sister, Chris Smith, Milwaukee; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Tony Kohnke, Oshkosh; and many nieces and nephews.
Before his illness, Jim enjoyed motorcycling, trips with his wife to Las Vegas, deer hunting and just spending times with his loved ones. He retired from Arvin-Meritor in 2003 and was a member of Local 291 and a friend of Bill's.
Jim passed away with dignity and up to the end did it "my way'.
Per Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
