Joseph John Adamo

ADAMO, JOSEPH JOHN; age 89; July 23, 1923; August 28, 2012. Beloved husband of Betty (Marshall); father of David Vincent (Cindy Hoogasian), Betti Jo Anne Adamo, Amy Christine (Harry) Caruso, and grandfather of Harry Caruso and Jessica Caruso. Born to Vincenzo and Rosina (Corraro) Adamo in Palermo, Sicily. Joseph immigrated to the U.S. at age 6, making Detroit his home. Joseph had two brothers, Vincenzo and Rudy, whom he admired and loved dearly. As a young man, Joseph enjoyed boxing and was a rigorous competitor. At age 18, Joseph was inducted into the Army. He served during World War II and fought throughout France and into Germany, where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return, Joseph was a proud graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Engineering. He and Betty were married in April 1953. Their first child David was born in 1956, Betti Jo in 1959, and Amy in 1961. the family resided in Avon Township, now Rochester Hills. Joseph served the Department of the Army as an engineer from August 1954 to August 1984. He helped design the M-1 Abrams Battle Tank and the HUM-VEE. Joseph had an avid interest in politics and was politically active in his community, although his family and their dogs were his deepest passion. Joseph enjoyed family gatherings and treasured his time with his extended family and his grandchildren. Joseph was a generous and loving husband and father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and son. He was compassionate, had a keen intelligence and a dry wit. He was preceded in death by cherished daughter, Betti Jo; brother, Vince; his parents,; and favorite canine friend, Schatze. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his two remaining children, his grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and several good friends. Joseph's love and kindness touched the lives of many and he will be missed. His life was celebrated at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 West University Dr., Rochester, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Entombment Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, August 31, 2012, at Guardian Angel Cemetery, 4701 N. Rochester Road, Oakland Township, followed by a luncheon.
