Harry E. Lichtwardt M.D. Obituary
LICHTWARDT
HARRY E., M.D.; November 22, 2012; age 93; peacefully at home at Fox Run Village, Novi. Beloved husband of the late Genevieve, (deceased October 21, 2012), for 65 years. He is survived by his sons, Ronald and Gregory; sisters, Ouida and Marion; brothers, John and Robert; and four grandchildren. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of six children of American parents, Harry went to college at Oberlin in Cleveland followed by medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. He served as a head of the Medical Corps on Okinawa in World War II. Taking up medical practice in Detroit, he met his beloved Genevieve, and they married in July, 1947. He was the first doctor to admit a patient at newly-opened William Beaumont Hospital in 1955, Royal Oak, and was soon joined by his brother and other surgeons in their urological practice. He helped pioneer many developments in urologic equipment and procedures and trained scores of residents from around the world in modern urology. Harry was very active in the YMCA and served in many capacities of the North-Central Section of the American Urological Association including as President and Historian. Retiring from practice in 1984, Harry leaves a long-established medical lectureship at Beaumont. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial tributes to the Beaumont Foundation, P.O. Box 5802, Troy, MI 48007-9620. An in-depth Life Celebration of Harry and Genevieve will be held during the summer of 2013. View obituary and share memories at
