Maxine Smith Obituary
SMITH, MAXINE; departed this life on May 9, 2013; at the age of 75. She was the daughter of the late Bernice and Reginald A. Robinson, Sr.; beloved wife of the late Frederick D. Smith. Mother of Danya D. Smith and Richard F. Smith; and grandmother of Imani Smith. She graduated from Valena C. Jones High School, in Bay St. Louis Mississippi. She continued her studies at Jackson State College (Jackson State University, Jackson Mississippi) where she completed a major in Elementary Education. She also completed a Masters Degree and Specialist Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Her teaching career began in Picayune, Mississippi, where she taught for ten years. Upon moving to Michigan, she taught third grade in the Pontiac Public School System at LeBaron Elemetary School for twenty years. Upon retirement, she continued to serve to the district as a substitute principal for a number of years. Maxine is survived by her siblings, Rosena Boarden, Reginald Robinson, Jr. (Yvonne), Andrew Robinson, Thomas Robinson (Betty), Doris Robinson and Donald Robinson. She is also survived by her in-laws, James Elsea Smith, Jr. (Anna), Helena Witherspoon, Randolph Smith (Helen) of Aurora, Illinois, Phyllis Adams (Claude), Shirley Ledsinger (Harold), and Carolyn Wilson (Paul); and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Maxine was a member of Newman A. M. E. Church, where she served in the choir and was a frequent participant in bible study and computer training classes. She was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Lambda Omega Chapter. She was also a member of the Phenomenal Red Hatters. A Memorial Service will be held at Newman A.M.E. Church (Pontiac, MI) on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Alfred Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are invited to attend an Ivies Beyond the Wall Ceremony on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Newman A.M.E.
