Joanne Battle Obituary
BATTLE, JOANNE; was born in Huntsville, Alabama, the second child of the late Addie and Ethel Crutcher Battle (a son, James, died in infancy); departed this earth June 28, 2011. She attended Council Training School, graduating with honors in 1965. She matriculated to Tuskegee University (Institute), graduating with a B.S. in secondary education in 1969. She later earned a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1970. Offered a job by the Pontiac School District, she began a thirty-nine year tenure which included thirty-two as an English teacher, three as an Assistant Principal, and four as Principal; thirty-eight of which were spent at her beloved Pontiac Northern High School, "Home of the Huskies." Over the years, Joanne received honors too numerous to list in detail, some of which included recognition from Oakland County, the City of Pontiac, Pontiac School District, the State of Michigan, the Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, the Heroines of Jericho, Queen of Sheba Chapter #15 Order of the Eastern Star, The Phenomenal Red Hatters, and a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her memories will be cherished by two sisters, Edna (James) Nance of Huntsville, Alabama and Louise (Willie Earl, deceased) Hayden, of Pontiac, MI; three nephews, James (Darasella) Nance, Jr. and Keith (Rita) Nance of Huntsville, AL, Barry (Joyce) Hayden of Pontiac, MI; two nieces, Brenda Nance of Huntsville, AL and Tracy (Lavan) Long of Pontiac, MI; four great nephews, Ron (Kim) Petty, James Nance III, and Keith Nance, Jr. of Huntsville, AL, Brandon Molett of Pontiac, MI; seven great nieces, Carlyn Nance of Montgomery, AL, Carasella Nance, of Miami, FL, Detra Nance, of Huntsville, AL, Ashley Molett, Kacie Hayden, Devon Long, and Dorian Long, of Pontiac, MI; one great great nephew, Cameron Petty and two great great nieces, Kayla Petty, Lyriq Molett-Moore; and paternal uncle, E. Brown (Cora) Battle of Huntsville, AL; life-long friends, Dorothy and Jimmy King, Anna and James Smith, Dorothy Hill, and Oweda Mayfield; and many relatives and friends. Ms. Battle can be viewed Monday, July 4, 2011 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Cobb's Funeral Home, located at 151 Orchard Lake Road in Pontiac. Going Home Service will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Douglas P. Jones, officiating.
