Leonard Garver

OBERLIN — Leonard Lee Garver, Ph.D., "Len," 81, of Oberlin, formerly of Schenectady, N.Y. , died peacefully at Kendal at Oberlin, March 10, 2014.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Lester and Katherine (Leonard) Garver in 1932.

After earning his B.S., M.S., and doctorate in electrical engineering from Northwestern University, Len went on to a career as a power systems engineer for General Electric, retiring from the same building 33 years later. Len also taught at Union College in Schenectady in the early 1970s in the management science department. Len was elected in 1977 a Fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, receiving the Charles Concordia Award in 2012 for his contributions to the energy industry.

Beloved husband of 54 years to Nancy Bradford Garver, devoted father of Andrew Garver and Meg (Mike) Percy, proud and loving grandfather ("G'Pa") of Jacob and Emma Percy, dear brother of Carolyn Killean and the late Virginia Dowman, Len was also an uncle, cousin, friend, and mentor.

There will be a memorial celebration of Len's life Saturday, June 7. Service begins at 3 p.m. in Kendal at Oberlin Heiser Auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Northwestern University, Engineering Department, Technological Institute, 2145 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL 60208; or the First Church in Oberlin, 106 North Main St., Oberlin, OH 44074.
