OBERLIN — Deaconess Janie Corris Lancaster, 97, of Oberlin, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Welcome Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Cairo, Ga.
She worked in housekeeping at Oberlin College for many years, retiring in 1987. Janie was the head of the deaconess board at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin and served on the Benevolence Fund at the church. She was a member of American Legion 656 Women's Auxilary and Missionary Society. Janie enjoyed gardening, baking, and spending time with family.
She is survived by her husband, Deacon James Lancaster of Oberlin; daughters Patricia L.W. Butler of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, and Pamela Biragbara of Strongsville, Ohio; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and sisters Evelyn O'Neil of Flushing Queens, N.Y., and Elease Eveans of Brooklyn, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her father, Owen W. Norwood; mother, Irene Norwood; and four sisters and five brothers.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Oberlin, with the Rev. Fred Bell officiating. There will be a private family burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alheimers Association or to New Life Hospice of Lorain.
