I was just his mail carrier for 11 years, but I always enjoyed the moments we'd meet up at the box and have a little talk. He was awesome!!

Charley's passing is like the turning of a page of history. I had the privilege of knowing Charley for nearly 20 years in the 2nd Infantry Division, Korean War Veterans Alliance (2ID-KWVA) which he led so fiercely and capably for 10 years before his retirement--once more. What he did (with Virginia's help and patience) would have taken 5 people in any other enterprise. Regarding the Korean War, he was a combat infantry officer; that speaks for itself. He received three Bronze Star Medals for Valor in Korea. His battles and deeds are mentioned in more than a dozen books about the Korean War. He was a real soldier! I also knew him in Germany as we served in different parts of the Defense Department at the same time. He was highly regarded.
Above all, Charley was a friend of my wife, Carolyn, and myself. Our visits with him and Virginia in Olympia will be missed indeed. Farewell, dear friend, I and a couple thousand members of the 2ID-KWVA, of which you are the Honorary Secretary-Emeritus, salute you. Well done.

Though I'm saddened at the news of Charley's passing, I'm also feeling fortunate to have known him. What a wonderful life he led, filled with love of his family, country and fellow citizens. Job well done! My sympathies go to Mrs. Heath and the family. Nyla Slosson -- Charley's old mail carrier -- He always brightened my day!
