Ethel McGovern Obituary

Ethel McGovern
April 18, 1931-Jan. 17, 2011

The heavens are shining a bit brighter since Ethel has ascended to be with God. Ethel was a vivacious, outgoing person, who could brighten up almost any day. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with cancer. Ethel was born in Kansas and relocated in her younger years to the northwest, Concrete in fact. This is where she met the love of her life, Chuck. Chuck and Ethel had been married for 60 years and had the joy and opportunity to travel extensively. Throughout their travels on cruises, European tours and other vacation spots they met many interesting people, whom they visited and kept in contact for years. Professionally, Ethel started out as a telephone operator and then dabbled in real estate. She graduated from Centralia Community College all the while helping to raise their two daughters. Ethel has been a member and leader of various organizations, such as St. Helen's Club, Olympia Yacht Club, Art Guilds, Beta Sigma Phi and a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and in the past very involved with their women's groups. She generally had a smile on her face with a hand extended to whoever needed it. Her laugh always set her apart and made other's days a little bit brighter. Ethel had the opportunity to be on the stage and acted superbly in the Cemetery Club, she was a bit of ham. While attending the Community College she was inspired and really got into her artwork that bloomed after retirement. Her mediums were oils and pencils, many of her paintings centered on landscapes of the northwest and southwest. She and Chuck for many years would spend their winters in Yuma, AZ, where a lot of their Washingtonian friends also were. Ethel is survived by her husband, Chuck; daughters, Karen McGovern and Kay Pearson; son-in-law, Caryl Pearson; grandsons, Eric Frederickson and Ryan McGovern; brother, Jerry Gifford; sister- in -law, Shirley Gifford; and niece, Sandie Millhouse. Her grandson, Ryan, was a special delight for her and joined in her spiritual nature and love for life. Ethel will be greatly missed, but we know she is out of pain and will be watching over us. Memorial services will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chehalis on January 28, 2011 at 3:30 p.m., a reception will follow. A "Celebration of Life" party will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis, please wear colorful apparel. Donations to the American Heart Assn. or the Cancer Society are also suggested.

Who ever saw Ethel when she didn't have a smile on her face. We've known her for many years, and in addition, she was one of my Beta Sigma Phi sisters. She was an accomplished lady. It's with a great deal of sadness that we send condolences to the family and most especially our friend, Chuck for your loss.

I am also a cousin as our dads were brothers. I knew Ethel well when we were children, but after her family moved to Washington and mine stayed in Kansas we went for many years without seeing each other. I am thankful for the times we were together in later years. What a blessing it was to visit with her by phone a couple of times in just the last few months. She expressed her faith in Jesus and sounded truly at peace. Chuck, Kay, Karen, Jerry, Shirley, you are in our prayers. May the comfort of the Holy Spirit surround you during your time of grief.

I first met Ethel and Chuck when i worked at Fullers maybe 45 to 50 years ago.My wife and I attended the same church and spent many nights at the Elks
Lodge. Ethel was a warm and caring lady.
She always had that wonderful smile no
matter how her day may have been going. It was a pleasure and a honor to
have known her and to carry out her groceries when she came to the store
and it that way I could talk and get to know her better.Ethel and Chuck were examples of a wonderful married
couple and also an example to all
how life should be and how to treat
all people with love and respect.
A wonderful lady and a true friend.
Nauna and I will miss your greatly.
God bless Chuck and the family at this difficult time. George & Nauna Mattis

Ethel took me under her wing when I moved to Chehalis and gave me a bridal shower. She was a funny and full of life Lady. She was always dressed to the nine and ready to go. She will be greatly missed.

About all has been said about Ethel that can be said, but I knew her as a cousin. I was privileged to go on a shopping trip with her in Houston, for shoes no less! I even got to pay for some of her clothes......we had so many good laughs while they visited us. Love to Chuck, Karen, Kay, Jerry and Shirley. Ted and Dixie Cassity (Wolfforth, TX)

Ethel was my favorite Queen! I loved her so much. She did make my day brighter and I loved hearing her trip stories. I'm gonna miss her so much. We would see eachother on a weekly basis. I loved all her rings on her fingers and always paying with her old time wallet. We would laugh cause of how long she had that. :( Love you Karen...

Chuck & family - So so sorry to hear about Ethel. She was the most outgoing and vivatious person I have had the privelege to know: she was a "kick in the pants" to be around. You'll miss her, I'm sure.
Take care. God Bless.
