Haydee Hernandez Obituary

Haydee H. Hernandez

Dr. Haydee H. Hernandez, 87, a resident of Olympia for 27 years, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of St. Valentine's Day (Monday, Feb. 14, 2011). Haydee was born in Matanzas, Cuba and practiced psychology of education for many years for schools in Matanzas. She entered the U.S. as a Cuban political refugee in 1963. Haydee is well known in Olympia, Spokane and Quincy/Ephrata, where, working for DSHS, she found a multitude of good, loving homes for orphaned and neglected children. Later, as her late husband Cesar retired and her children moved to Olympia, Cesar and Haydee followed to Olympia, and she began managing the DSHS Olympia field office of adult protective services until she retired in 1989. Haydee then trained her cocker spaniel, Oliver, to provide canine services for hospital patients. Her loving and caring nature never stopped, even during her long battle with Alzheimers, she still tried to take care of others as much as she possibly could.
Haydee is survived by her two daughters, Haydee H. Bannon and Maria Victoria H. Peeler, as well as her son-in- law, David C. Peeler, and her granddaughter Sarah Beth H. Peeler, and Sarah Beth's fiance Matt Huot. She is also survived by a multitude of cousins and their children and grandchildren who reside all over the world.
A viewing will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 at Funeral Alternatives, 2830 Willamette Dr. S.E., Suite G. A noon funeral mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Michael's Westside Chapel, 1835 Overhulse Road NW, Olympia. Following mass, a car procession will reach Haydee's interment, next to her husband, Cesar, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Tumwater, 3850 Cleveland Avenue SE, Tumwater, WA 98501. Reception will be held at Funeral Alternatives following interment.

I worked with Haydee in both the Spokane and Olympia DSHS offices. She made every work setting a better place. She was a wonderful person with a big heart and was respected for her knowledge and professionalism both by co-workers and staff in other agencies. She was loved by clients who appreciated both the help they received and the friendship and care that she extended. She understood not only what we were supposed to do, but truly understood how and why with her deep insight into the human condition. I remember several incidents in which she helped the system to change when it was not working as it should - that is to help those in need who were vulnerable. She was a truly charitable person and I know that her family has much to be proud of, both in terms of her personal and her professiona legacy.

Maria, Masao and I extend our heart felt condolences to you and your family. What an extraordinary life your mom lived! The immortaliy of her love and generousity in serving others is a comfort to draw from at this sad time. You are in my thoughts and prayers sister.

Maria, your mother was obviously a wonderful, caring person. Her life's work was apparently to help others, and she did that in many ways. Although I never met her, you and I exchanged information about our mothers throughout their illnesses. And the one thing that I can attest to is that she raised a wonderful, smart, funny, capable daughter. You're a testament to your mother every day. Be glad throughout this trying time that you knew her so well, and she you.

Maria,
I have good memories of spending time with your family when you first came from Cuba to Quincy. It was wonderful to read the bio. of your mom's life. What a great gal! I told my mom Marj and she remembered her well still. I will read her your article of Haydee.
I will offer up a Mass for your mom.
Know our family loves you and your mom.
We'll be with you in thoughts.
love in Christ,

Maria:

June and I were saddened by the news of your mother's passing.. Sarah Beth loved her grandmother very much, and having read her obituary, I can understand why. As somebody who presided over juvenile court for 25 years, I can appreciate her dedication to improving the lives of neglected children. I'm sure her arrival in paradise was cause for great celebration. Our prayers are with you always.
