John Hanson Obituary

John Ellery Hanson

John Hanson, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, died on April 19, 2011, in the home he shared with his longtime companion, Grace Duey. John was born on Aug. 16, 1922, on the Carl John Hanson ranch near Big Timber, Montana. John proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1942, and was a prisoner of war for over 3 years. After the war he graduated from Stanford University and married Nancy Rodda York in 1950. They had two daughters. After Nancy's death he retired and moved to the Olympia area. John was active in local veterans and ex-POW groups and was a long-time volunteer at the Veterans' Memorial Museum in Chehalis.
John is survived by his companion Grace Duey. He is also survived by his daughters, Carol Hanson and Linda (Charles) Harper, two granddaughters, Allison and Elizabeth Harper (all in Indiana), his sister, Catherine Hargrove of Graham, WA, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy and sister Edith.
Fond memories he has left us with include family dinners, fishing trips, dances, travels, and certain unforgettable jokes. He was always ready with a smile, a hug, a shoulder to lean on, and a positive, helpful point of view. He was a proud and loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and was highly regarded and warmly appreciated by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. at the Veterans' Memorial Museum in Chehalis.

John was the best neighbor and friend to have for the past 10 years. He always had a smile on his face. He use to come next door and he and my husband would sit on the patio and discuss the war they were in. We really enjoyed having him and Grace for neighbors and I will miss him.

The confines of the obituary barely scratch the surface of the man John Hanson. Sort of like saying its a red car when you are looking at a screaming F41 Ferrari. After his capture in the Phillipines, he was part of the Bataan death march and those three years as a POW were not in some Hogans Heros comfort camp - he was a slave laborer in a steel mill on a starvation diet with sadistic guards. He was generous with his time and his assets. He kept a salad garden every year and was proud of his perfect lettuce and tomatos. For many years he would invade the thorny blackberry patches for the raw materials of his delicious jelly. He said the secret ingedient was a little of your own blood. We enjoyed the results every Christmas (and reciprocated with chokecherry jelly which he had enjoyed in Montana.) He had a blast taking nieces and nephews (and grands of each) out on his boat in Puget sound. Salmon were always the quarry, but a fall back to flounder and what ever we could drag up from the bottom made the day when the salmon were small or scarce. He would give the kids a turn at the helm on the way in or out making them feel important and wanted - pretty much the way he dealt with everyone and prime reason that he is so beloved and will be missed by all.
