Marguerite Pratt Obituary

Marguerite Mahoney Pratt

Mrs. Marguerite "Peg" Pratt passed away peacefully on February 25, 2011, in Olympia, WA. She was born Marguerite Elizabeth Mahoney on July 4, 1917, in Canton, New York, the fourth of six children to Jeremiah J. and Lottie Wells Mahoney. Mrs. Pratt grew up in Ogdensburg, New York on the St. Lawrence River. She attended Canton ATC and later Michigan State University where she met her future husband, James D. "Duane" Sambrook, an engineering student from Auburn, New York. They were married in 1940, and eventually settled in Warren, Michigan.
As Peg Sambrook, she led a very active life. Along with volunteer work for the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts and the City of Warren YMCA, Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church and Center Line School Board, she traveled extensively with her husband and daughter. She was also active in the Michigan Bar Association and Mobile Home Park Owners Association with her husband. After Mr. Sambrook's death in 1974, Peg became the owner of Woodland Waters Campground in Romeo, Michigan, which she operated for 20 years.
After a brief second marriage to Gordon A. Myers and his untimely death, Peg married Robert M. "Bob" Pratt in 1983. The Pratts enjoyed taking cruises and participating in various railroad and stamp collecting organizations. The years before Bob's death in 2006 were spent living in the Florida Keys and later in Gainesville, Florida.
Following extensive colon cancer surgery, Peg moved to Lacey, Washington, in 2007 to be near her daughter and grandson. She enjoyed living in the Panorama Retirement Community, seeing the Pacific Northwest, writing and socializing.
Mrs. Pratt was preceded in death by her two sisters, Miss Katherine Mahoney and Mrs. Frances Sheehan, and a brother, Dr. John Mahoney. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Mary Hawes of Malone, New York; sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Mahoney of Ogdensburg; brother, James Mahoney of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; her daughter, Lucille Sambrook of Olympia, Washington; grandson, John Madziarczyk; and niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Terri) Hawes, all of Seattle. Contemporaries Mrs. Marian Eiband of Maryland, Mr. and Mrs. Roderick (Nadine) Eiband of Delaware, and Mrs. Dorothy Eiband of California, nieces and nephew will feel her loss as well.
She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Snell, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Katherine) Casey and Mr. and Mrs. James (Michele) Sheehan, all of Potsdam, New York; and Mrs. Victoria Sambrook of North Syracuse, New York; nephews and niece Mr. Richard Sambrook, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Sambrook, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph (Gloria) Campbell, all of Michigan.
Along with Mr. Pratt's stepdaughters and sons, Mrs. Pratt also had many dear friends in Michigan and scattered around the country.
In accordance with Peg's desires, there will be no Memorial Service. She had made her wishes known that she would like her loved ones to remember her as she was throughout her long active life. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Pratt's name may be made to the Girl Scouts of America.
Arrangements have been made through Masonic Memorial Park of Tumwater, Washington, and Funeral Alternatives of Washington, 360-753-1065. To leave memories of Peg or condolences for the family, go to www.FuneralAlternatives.org.

Lucy and Family, Peg and I became good friends during the time she lived in Traverse City, MI. I started cleaning and picking up groceries for her and soon my Thursdays were a day I looked forward too. We shared the same birthday and lots of conversation. I've never seen a women her age have as many visitors as she did...she made me tired! I'm so sad I missed her phone call to me on Valentine's Day as she caught me away on vacation. I've tried to call her many times since my return home and was saddend to learn of her passing. What a special, sweet and gentle woman. She impacted my life in such a short time with her unravering possitive attitude towards life and aging. I will miss you Peg! Amy LaForest-Thomas

Lucy and John,
You are in our thoughts and prayers. We especially enjoyed our visit with Aunt Peg last fall. It was wonderful to spend time and share memories with her. She lived a remarkable life. Love, Dick and Katherine
