Virginia Talcott Obituary

Virginia Alderson Talcott

Of Olympia, Washington, passed away on June 6, 2011. She was 93 years old. She was born in Spokane, Washington December 9, 1917 to Emma and Herbert Christopher Alderson.
After graduating from Lewis and Clark High School in 1936, Virginia attended the University of Washington, where she studied art and interior design. She was the president of her sorority, Chi Omega. In 1940 she was selected as one of 50 delegates to participate in the America-Japan Student Conference in Japan, where she traveled extensively. She then continued her studies at the University of Hawaii.
While attending the University of Washington, Virginia met Richard "Dick" Noyes Talcott, Sr. After marrying in 1941, they settled in Olympia, where Dick worked in the family business, Talcott Jewelers. Together they raised five children, teaching all of them to ski on the rope tows at Paradise, Mt. Rainier. Virginia was passionate about gardening and playing golf, and was an avid collector of antiques and glass. She was an active member of numerous volunteer and special interest organizations, including St. Mary's Guild, St. Peter Hospital Auxiliary (Charter Member), PEO, the Governor's Mansion Foundation Board, the Early American Glass Club, Bess French Orthopedic Guild, and the Washington State Capitol Museum. She made many friends through these community involvements. She and Dick were also members of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Olympia Golf and Country Club, the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Pacific Northwest Ancient Skiers, and the Olympia Ski Club.
Virginia is survived by her five children, Winona Pietila, Susan (Bob) Andrew, Richard (Cecilia) Talcott Jr., Gary Talcott, and Lori (Robert Kolden) Talcott; her seven grandchildren; her sister Winona Alderson Henderson; her extended family and many beloved friends, and her devoted care-givers, especially Daniella and Dan Vicovan. Her beloved husband Dick preceded her in death.
Virginia will always be remembered for her kind heart, sense of humor, and devotion to her family. She will be missed by all those who knew her.
At Virginia's request, there will be a private family memorial. In her memory the family is asking donations be made to Providence St. Peter Hospital or St. Mary's Church Guild.

I only know Virginia through the eyes and heart of her beautiful and devoted granddaughter Angelynn Talcott. I am sure that Angelynn's graciousness and kindness and intelligence have been shaped in many ways by her close relationship with her wonderful grandmother. And for that we all owe Virginia a debt of gratitude for a life well-lived, for the examples she set, and for a wonderful legacy which continues on, in those whose lives she touched.

My first job was at Talcott Jewelers-I loved it there! I remember a Christmas party at Richard & Virginia's home-it was beautiful-she was always a pleasure to see & talk to the times she would stop in the jewelry store. I am very greatful I knew & worked for such a wonderful family!

Noni, Richard, Susan, Gary & Lori: Your mother was my neighbor and friend through some of the toughest years of my life. I learned so much from her as we talked about our families and gardens. Her smile, warmth and kindness are cherished memories. Peace and blessings, Anne Avery

I have learned so much in my life by Virginia just being in it. From age 3 and now 50! Finding mutual friends of people of all ages, there was a connection somewhere. From past neighbors, customers I had, to Antique, Glass, and all her Club's, etc. She was everywhere and always involved. But the most important involvment was creating her family, doing things togeather, learning and exploring places, being supportive of each other always. It's one of the best gifts Richard and Virginia could have ever given back. Her children started spreading that value long ago, how lucky for their families and loved ones and all the friends to come. My heart goes out to you all, Noni, Susan, Richard, Gary and Lori. (for starters) And it always will.

My grandmother was an incredible lady. Smart, feisty, funny, loving, full of life and always put family first. Her smile was contagious and could fill a room. I will always hold her in my heart and cherish all of the wonderful memories with her.

I love you Grandma! You had the warmest unconditional love, the most upbeat and positive attitude and a solid work ethic that inspired all of us to do our best. Your love of family was beautiful to see, and your eye for quality was perfect. You raised five beautiful, talented, hard working and successful kids. We all miss you and you'll be in our thoughts, everyday forever...
