Carol Mae (Mitchell) Cooper Carol Cooper, 84, died October 30, 2012 at home, 10 days after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, surrounded by the love of her family. Born June 24, 1928 in Vancouver, WA, Carol was a child of the Depression, which shaped her values throughout her life. While attending Vancouver High School, she met Lawrence Cooper in the band drum section. Carol spent two years at Linfield College, OR. She and Lawrence married in 1948, and settled in Olympia in 1963. Carol was the foundation of her family, doing the many things that loving mothers do, including creating beautiful quilts for each family member. Carol's early work included being a DJ at KCLX in Colfax, reporter at Colfax's Daily Bulletin, and later a top Avon Sales Rep. in Olympia. She was Secretary, then Office Manager, and finally Church Business Administrator for the First United Methodist Church of Olympia (FUMCO) from 1976-2003. Carol was a member of the National Association of Church Business Administration, obtaining her certification as a Fellow in Church Business Administration in 1988. She was proud to receive their national Hall of Fame Recognition award in 1997. In the 1930's, Carol's family hosted many foster children, which led to her lifelong commitment to children in need. She was the driving force behind the Methodist Quilt Group which provides quilts for DSHS's foster child program. Carol embodied a spirit of service to others, the basis by which she and Lawrence raised their children. Carol kept strong family traditions: family meals each evening, Christmas cookie baking, summer camping trips, trick-or-treating for UNICEF, berry picking each summer, and compiling family history. She posted inspirational words for her children to live by throughout the home: "Good ideas are not enough; it's what you do with them that counts." She continued to share this with others including school children in her granddaughter's classroom. Carol is survived by Lawrence, her lifelong love and husband of 64 years; sister, Rosalee Johnson; sister-in-law, Doro Mitchell; and children, Cathy, Connie (Greg), Steve (Jill), Cindy (Erik); grandchildren, Hollie (Gregor), Adam (Kris), Tony (Tina), Ben, Jamie, Lauren, Brian, Zac, Claire, and Rose; and great-granddaughters, Mackenzie, Baylee, Sela, and Rheya. Carol is preceded in death by her brother, Doug Mitchell; and brother-in-law Eric Johnson. As she would say: "Bless Your Hearts". A celebration of Carol's life will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 1224 Legion Way SE, Olympia. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to FUMCO for the Madison School assistance program, or the Organ Fund; NACBA Endowment Fund (www.nacba.net); or Providence SoundHomeCare & Hospice c/o Providence St. Peter Foundation. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice team for helping us through this time.
