Bluma TISCHLER Obituary
1924 - 2015
Dr. Bluma Tischler (Gorkfinkel) was born in 1924 in Baranowicze, Poland. Dr. Tischler studied medicine in Russia, Poland, Germany and Canada, and ultimately graduated from McGill University with a specialty in Pediatrics. Over time Dr. Tischler became a widely recognized expert in genetic and metabolic diseases. Her major interest was PKU (phenylketonuria) and she was instrumental in the introduction of the Guthrie test, which is a newborn screening test for PKU. Dr. Tischler was Medical Director of Woodlands School and a Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia. In 1978 Dr. Tischler received the American Association for Mental Deficiency Award and was honoured in the BC Legislature. She died peacefully surrounded by family on May 16, 2015. Dr. Tischler is survived by her sons Aron (Neri) and Fred (Aimee) and her grandchildren, Yael, Ben, Raphy, Ezra and Adin.
