Ernest Sutherland

"Ernie" Ernest John Sutherland
17 September 1921 – 7 November 2012
On Wednesday, November 7, 2012, Ernie Sutherland died at home in Summerland, suddenly and without a fuss. He was healthy, active, and curious almost to the day he died at age 91. He will be remembered as a man with many dear friends at all stages of his life and many more who knew him well enough to wave and stop for a chat about the prospect of rain or the performance of the stock market. Ernie was a graduate of UBC, a chemist who found a home at General Paint in Vancouver in the 1940's developing new formulas. He retired some 20 years later as a part owner of the company. He grew up loving (and harbouring) animals and wandering free in the city and on mountains trails. He met his true love Audrey when she was just 15, and he married her in 1945 as soon as the war was over. He leaves behind Audrey his wife of 67 years, son Brian (Margot) of Vancouver, grandson Brett (Lori) of Kelowna, grandson Glen (Nickie) of Langley, grandsons Anthony(Jenn) and Jamie and six great grandchildren. Ernie was predeceased by daughter Carol in 2008. Ernie counted himself a lucky man, all his life. In the end, he moved on quietly, swiftly, and without pain. At his request, no service was held.
