Peter OKA Obituary

OKA, Peter Eiichiro
March 3, 1942 - December 25, 2012
Our dear Peter passed away in Burnaby Hospital on Christmas Day, after a decline following several illnesses. Beloved only son of Kinori and Sanzo Oka, who predeceased him, he is deeply missed by his loving sisters, Nancy Woodward, Masako Stillwell and brother-in-law Peter Stillwell; his fellow residents Audrey, Joseph and Kathleen; and many friends. Peter was born in Woodfibre BC, with extended family residing in Ontario, Quebec and Washington State. He became visually impaired at age 20, when he learnt more about relying on the help of others. At age 7, Peter entered Woodlands School in New Westminster, where he lived until 1983, returning to his community under the auspices of the Community Living Society. Assisted by caring helpers in his homes, he lived a wonderfully full and varied life for an additional 29 years. For successfully richly enhancing his life, our thanks to Mrs. Maxine Leask, an extraordinary caregiver and friend. For 27 years, Peter participated in many interesting programs, work contracts, and volunteer work at Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion, where he made many friends. He was a special light and dear to his family, who feel blessed to have had his love and guidance in their lives. A funeral service will be held at the Bell and Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings St. Burnaby, BC on Tuesday, January 8 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made if desired, to the Community Living Society.
