JOHNSTON, Vernon Clark Elmer
1918 - 2013
Passed away suddenly, February 18, 2013 at the age of 94. Vern is survived by his sister Ella (Kellock) and his brother Ray; his three children Gerry (Dany), Sharon and Brian (Jill); five grandchildren Jennifer (Cory), Sean (Marsha), Jeffrey, Eric and Jeremy; four great-grandchildren Liam, Wyatt, Eva and Jessica; and admired nieces and nephews. Vern was predeceased in 2007 by his beloved wife and best friend Audray, his lifelong companion for 65 years, brother Bert and granddaughter Kira. Vern was a proud navy veteran of WWII
. His presence will be greatly missed on Remembrance Day as he always attended the services at his local cenotaph representing those Veterans. Vern spent his working years as a builder. The construction company he owned jointly with his brother Ray built many buildings in Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the interior of British Columbia. Many townhouse and apartment complexes, warehouses, car dealerships, Courthouses and Churches still standing are a testament to their construction skills. A long-time resident of Tsawwassen, Vern enjoyed his time on the water, especially sailing. He built his own sailboat and named the boat after his first grandchild, Jennifer. He was one of the founding members of the Tsawwassen Yacht Club. In his retirement years, Vern took up wood and stone carving and created some remarkable pieces of artwork. He also lovingly restored an old MG. Vern was always building or creating or restoring, and freely shared his knowledge and expertise with anyone who requested it from him. Vern will be remembered by his family for his wisdom he shared, the way he lived, the examples he set, the work he put into doing things well, his passions and his love.
"We will all miss the sound of his voice."
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church, 5575 - 6th Avenue, Tsawwassen, BC.
