CUTHBERT, Doug
August 6, 1946 - March 3, 2015
Died peacefully in his sleep, following many years of battling COPD. He is survived by his niece and nephew, Marianne and Shaun Bullied. He played drums in such acts as the Night Train Revue and his graphic design work can be found splashed all over the local entertainment scene. A Celebration of Life will be held for him March 29, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Wise Hall (1882 Adanac). In lieu of flowers, please donate to the BC Lung Association. Till next time we meet - love you Uncle Doug.

Was my neighbour growing up on Charles Street. Listened to him playing thousands of times. He tried showing me how to play the drums which I could never mastered. Pretty sure I was at his wedding in N Van

Thinking of you today Doug. I miss those times we played with Riley on stage. You were such an important part of our show. You left us too soon. You were such a kind, gentle and talented soul. Hope youre playing the drums where you are. Much love

Bless the Reiters and Gerrards for sustaining this book and Doug's memory. I was in the US at the time and missed news of his passing.

Back in NTR's heyday I was too young to actually see the band. But I'd hear their radio ads for club and dance dates. The singers always had exotic names (Chuck Flintroy, Sy Risby, Lovena Fox). The band, by mid-60s standards, was gargantuan. There always seemed to be up to a dozen righteous players in promotional photos. Even at my tender age, I realized they must've done good box office to feed so many members.

By the mid-70s, I was a freelance music scribe. One night, I met Doug at a party. He was comfortable in his skin and a great raconteur. We spoke of many things, including music, but he didn't turn the topic to his own musical career. Indeed, I only learned from another guest, a day or two later, of Doug's illustrious pedigree. Such a gent.

As I recently wrote in an online tribute to the late Bobby Taylor, Vancouver defied its stereotypical image of being Haight Ashbury North by nurturing a significant contingent of R & B/Soul musicians. Doug did his part to lay down a solid foundation for that scene to prosper.

Belated Godspeed, Doug.

You were admired and respected by many and a very big part of my early life. I will always remember your passion and drive in your music, your art and your friendships. Some of my happiest memories were of being on the road with you and the NTR, the many nights at Oil Can Harry's and the days in my mother's kitchen, where she fed you. I will miss your Facebook posts, they always brought you back to mind. Rest in peace, my friend.

Since grade 4 you sat behind me (Casey then Cuthbert). We spent time at the "Y" and then on the road with Night Train. I see you were in pain and am glad it is over for you. See you later around the next corner.

A fine gentleman and a great drummer. I remember well playing with him in the sixties and at Oil Can Harry's. He will be missed.

Doug Cuthbert AKA Whitey Miles, we played many a gig and butted heads like Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton. Regardless, we spent many good times having Chinese dinners and socializing....we're both Leos. You're out of your pain and up there with George Chapelas and Russell Mar....watching football games....playing poker....bring a blank cheque.
Miss you....Henry & Yvonne

Hey Doug... I'm so sorry we never got to have that coffee together to remember the good times and share a few laffs. It's a reminder not to forget what's important in life. You will never be forgotten my friend.

Dougie, Dougie, Dougie!!
You were such a beautiful, kind man. And what a drummer!! It teaches me to spend more time with the good guys. All of my and my wife Ebba's love to you. I will cherish the long meet we had with brother Donny Gerrard after the Mavis Staples show in VanCity last year.
Yesterday, I was looking at a Swan Silvertones and a The Caravans gospel vinyl album that you had given me forty years ago. Love ya' Doug!
