VAN LEEUWEN, Elsie May Violet
(nee Winter)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elsie May Violet on May 4, 2012. Elsie is survived by her family; children Leonard (Laurie), Barry (Katherine), Anne (Dave), Deanna; 7 grandchildren Megan, Chelsea, Adam, Lauren, Kara, Kevin, Talia; 3 nieces Catherine (Ray), Helen, Margaret (Dean), and their children Fraser, Mitchell, Grant, and Nicole. Elsie was born in New Westminster B.C. May 11, 1926. She lived her entire life on the same street in Coquitlam. Some of her favourite memories of her childhood pioneer days included spending time with her father, mother, and two dear brothers Benny and Eddie, hiking to Rocky Point or Como Lake for a swim and enjoying the lifelong friendships she made while attending Mountain View School. She met her future husband Wim at a dance in New Westminster and was married in 1952. They were blessed with four children over the next 10 years and enjoyed raising their family with annual trips to Puntzi Lake and White Rock. Elsie was very saddened by the loss of her two brothers Benny who was lost in the war, and Eddie who passed away at the age of 53 shortly after the death of his wife Beverly, leaving behind 3 daughters who Elsie came to love as her own. As the years passed under her everloving guidance and care the family continued to flourish and grow. Sons and daughters-in-law were added along with numerous dearly loved grandchildren. Elsie's love of family and friends was evident in her actions, ensuring that all holidays and birthdays were celebrated. Her home was a constant hub of activity with family and friends always welcome to enjoy her abundant hospitality, sound advice, and her vividly remembered stories. Elsie survived various health challenges over the years but always kept a positive attitude through her strong will to live. Her final days were spent in her home surrounded by family with her cherished cat Rascal by her side. She will be fondly remembered at a celebration of her life on what would have been her 86th birthday May 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Burquitlam Funeral Home, 625 North Road, Coquitlam. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society of BC in her memory would be appreciated.
