Hugh Tildesley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Mar. 16, 2016.
Hugh D'Orsey Tildesley September 28, 1950 - March 13, 2016 Hugh passed away peacefully on the evening of March 13, 2016, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Vancouver General Hospital, surrounded by his family. To the nurses and staff of the sixteenth floor we would like to thank you for your compassion, professionalism and support. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 33 years, Deborah, his three children; Donovan, Hamish, and Catherine, his brother David, his friends, colleagues, students and faithful patients. He was predeceased by his brother Murray in 2010.

Born in the small town of Rosemère, Quebec, Hugh developed an early love of sports. He played hockey, competed in swimming, and was the quarterback on the Rosemère High football team. From the age of ten he knew that medicine was his calling, and after a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics at the University of McGill, he went on to pursue his MD at the same university. In 1975 he met his wife, Deborah, and together they moved first to Matheson Ontario, then to Stony Plain Alberta, finally settling in Vancouver in 1984, where Hugh took a position as an endocrinologist at St. Paul's Hospital. Over the next 32 years, he held positions as Head of Endocrinology, Director of the Diabetes Centre, and created the Western Canadian Insulin Pump Centre and Endocrine Research Society. An innovator, Hugh built the Internet Blood Glucose Monitoring System, which allowed patients to report their blood sugars via a web-based interface. Hugh loved photography, his dogs, tailored nicknames, a new practical joke and an Old World wine.

Hugh was not only a good friend to many, but also a coach and a mentor. In 1997, he expanded his practice to include a gap student program, which provided prospective medical students with clinical research experience. He spent countless hours coaching his son, Donovan, to four Paralympic Games in the sport of swimming, where he won five medals and broke three World Records.

He was a devoted family man, who relished the time he spent with his wife and three children. Golf was his other passion, and he cherished relationships formed at the Point Grey Golf Club. He will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, unwavering positivity, and his often irreverent sense of humour.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Point Grey Golf Club, Tuesday March 22 at 4PM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Pancreatic Cancer Canada at pancreaticcancercanada.ca.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I was very sorry to find Hugh’s obituary. My sister in law and I were talking about who worked in Matheson with my Dad, Dr Robert Killingbeck. Dad so enjoyed having Hugh, and Al Jones in Matheson. I know he popped in to see my patients, when they retired in Winnipeg. We Goggled looking for him, and found this! Very sorry for your loss.
He will be remembered

What a shock it is this moment five years after Hugh's passing, to read of his untimely demise. I am still reeling. Hugh was a large part of the 'save the (Stony Plain) hospital' team under the incomparable leadership of Dr. Donovan Ross. And together they did.

I remember one evening in 1982 when he and Debbie joined my husband Bob and me for dinner at our country home, along with Patti and Graeme McCauley. During this time together, I referred to Debbie as his wife; Hugh gently corrected my assumption, saying that they weren't married. For some odd reason this blindsided me and I blurted out, "Well, you should be!" I guess he took my advice as they did indeed go on to marry. They eventually gave birth to their very special son who became the namesake of Dr. Donovan Ross, whom Hugh had admired greatly.

In a serendipitous event, Bob and I moved that same year to Rosemère, Quebec for a sabbatical, where we lived just two blocks from Hugh's family home and school. Six degrees of separation for sure.

In ways that he knew about then and now, Hugh has had a profound impact in the direction of my life.

Very sorry to learn of Hughes passing. We were classmates at Rosemere High School. Hugh was active in school sports, leading the basketball team and jr football team to championships.
After graduating in 1967 I saw Hugh a few times. Once in Montreal while he was studying medicine at McGill, and a few years later in Matheson, Ont. where he was practicing.

Last night I dreamed of my best friend from Mrs. Bickford's grade 1 class in Rosemere, and this morning I googled Hugh. I am so sad to hear he is gone. He was the most lovely six-year-old, so kind.
My condolences to you all.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. I have been seeing Dr. Tildsley for thirty years and he ways had time to listen. When I saw him it was not just clinical, he would always talk about family life, mine as well as his. I remember watching this hour has 22 minutes and talking to him and laughing about all that went on behind the scenes. I considered myself a lucky man to have our paths cross as they did. He gave me an opportunity to enjoy my family growing up that would have never happened if not for him.

Sincerely

My deepest condolences to Hugh's family, friends and colleagues. I knew Hugh as we were growing up in Rosemere, and was fortunate to have him as a trusted friend. He was the coolest guy we knew- he was intelligent, athletic, daring, and he had a car-a great combination! I will always remember him and of our coming of age adventures. It is only fitting that he leaves behind a life of service and accomplishments.

I met Dr. T many years ago at the diabetic Clinic at St.Pauls Hospital. When he took up office on Davie St I followed him there. Only 4 short years ago I cried on a visit telling Dr.T of my husband demise to pancreatic cancer.
Little did I know I would have to say goodbye to an incredible man and Dr to this silent killer. He will be missed by the many whose lives he touched. I will carry a picture of him in my heart that I observed of him on my last visit to his office, at the time I
I had no idea I was saying goodbye.
may the love for his family, friends and patients continue to bring comfort as time goes on. To his wife and children I know you will feel his arms around you each and every day. I ask God's Blessings to you all now and always.

I am trying to put words together to express my memories of Hugh, and to offer you all, my sincere condolences. I swam on the Rosemere team when we were in our teens. Memories I will never forget. Hughsie, as we called him then, was an amazing swimmer, Even then, a serious guy, with a wicked sense of humour. I met Hugh again, in Montreal, years later, when he was at McGill, in Med school. He had grown, and I knew he would be a fabulous physician, someday. Through all these years, we have all grown, I now have children following in Hugh's footsteps, and I would love to think that he had an impression on all of us back in the 60's. My heart goes out to you, his family and current friends, we will all miss him, xx Marilyn

We shared some some great memories of swim team days in Rosemere; racing his Bentley around track at Le Circuit; cattle round up in Stony Plain; and more recently, enjoying Grey Cup at BC Place. I have been a patient of Dr. Tildesley for over 25 years, and a diabetic for 60 years. Dr. Tildesley always had my best interest at heart, and added new insulins which I am sure have added to my longevity with the disease. I wish his family strength in his passing. He is one of best things to happen to many diabetics who have been helped by his knowledge and personal commitment to our welfare. Thank you. Allen Hunt

Dr. Tildesley took care of my father from 30 years ago until I lost him in 1997, and then took care of my mother until now. He was ever so full of patience and humour but especially of kindness. I will miss him dearly.

Words can't express my sadness in hearing of Dr. T's passing, even though just early last month he sat across from me, telling me how pleased he was with my Type 2 diabetes. He has been my beacon for the past 20 years and never once criticized when I wasn't doing well, but always encouraged me to do better. He talked of his family and oh how proud he was. He always asked me about my family and we exchanged stories of Stoney Plain. We have lost a brilliant man, much to early. His contribution to the medical community is immense. Thank you Dr. T, you will always be in my thoughts. S. Bordeleau

It was indeed a shock to hear that Dr. Tildesley had passed away. He was my Type 2 Diabetes Doctor for over 10 years ever since meeting him at the St. Paul's clinic. He was ever vigilant with my care and he and I would debate back and forth the pros and cons of Insulin. It was always a joy to visit him on my annual visits as we would spend time talking about politics, world affairs and the ever changing real estate values in Vancouver. A Great and Gentle Man who will be sorely missed in our community. God Bless and Ciao Dr. Tildesley!

As a patient of Dr. Tildesley, and a neighbor to him (though we never met in that location) in Matheson, I offer my celebration of his life, some of which, in our conversations, he impressed upon me.
