1944 - 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Robert Brodie on Sunday, February 24, 2013. John was a loving husband of 46 years to Ruth (Bailey), dearly beloved father to Elizabeth, Anne Fischer (David) and Margaret, and proud grandfather to Claire and Malcolm Fischer. John was also a devoted big brother to Heather Melidones (Jim) and Barbara Brodie-Wellington (Pat), providing loving guidance and sharing many happy times together.
John's love of family and friends, and his "Joie de Vivre" were legendary. He was always interested in people, giving generously of his time to mentor young professionals, and providing wise counsel and an encouraging and optimistic outlook on the world. He was known as a warm-hearted family man, with a strong sense of integrity and fair play. John had a terrific sense of humour with a unique ability to connect with others and create special memories.
Born in Quebec City and raised on the Prairies, John attended St. Johns Ravenscourt in Winnipeg, and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1966. He had a successful 36-year career with KPMG and its predecessor firms, serving on its national board and holding a number of leadership positions. John was honoured to become a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) in 2002. Since retiring from KPMG in 2003, he served on a number of public company boards where he was integral to the completion of many successful transactions in which he took great pride. John often stated that he felt privileged to work with such outstanding directors and management teams.
John's love of the outdoors was reflected in his skiing at Whistler, fly fishing in mountain streams, golfing at various world class golf clubs, and boating with the family close to home. His adventures extended across international boundaries as he and Ruth travelled throughout the world. As well, John was a truly passionate Canadian and believed strongly in actively engaging in his community, serving on the boards of local organizations and supporting several political campaigns. He was a role model to many for the way he truly lived life.
John's family would like to thank the staff at Vancouver General Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency for their dedicated and compassionate care.
A Celebration of Life will be held in John's honour at the Vancouver Club on Friday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m.
John was committed to supporting the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, should you wish to make a donation in his memory.
