WEITEMEYER, Lisl
November 26, 1920 - February 7, 2013
Lisl Weitemeyer died peacefully at Burnaby General Hospital from complications of a heart attack. Lisl was born in Erding, Germany, the first of four children of Josef and Pauline Wenig. She worked in the family business and from an early age sold poultry, butter and eggs at the weekly market in Munich. She was very proud of her truck driving skills. In 1944 Lisl married Berthold (Bert) Weitemeyer. Together with their young son and daughter they immigrated to Canada in 1953, travelling by boat to Quebec City and by immigrant train to Edmonton. Two years later they moved to New Westminster, B.C. In 1956 the family moved into a new house in Surrey that was to be Lisl's home for the next 54 years. Lisl became a proud Canadian citizen in 1958. The unwavering work ethic Lisl developed in the family business assured her of life-long employment until she retired from Kelly Douglas in 1983. Lisl was feisty and fearless and approached every task with great fervor. She was devoted to her family, fiercely loyal and spoke her mind. Lisl and Bert travelled extensively in Canada and the U.S.A. After Bert's death in 1988, her travels included Mexico, the Caribbean, Australia, South America, Europe and Asia. In her youth, Lisl was active in gymnastics, track and field, swimming and skiing. She learned to ride horses at age 70 and continued weekly riding lessons until age 80. For the last three years of her life, Lisl lived in the Mulberry Retirement Residence in Burnaby. Lisl's parents and an infant sister, her husband Bert, and her nephew Steven Schott, predeceased her. Survived by her son Dr. Rudy (Dr. Joan Hyland) Weitemeyer, her daughter Dr. Christa (Dr. Thomas) Thomson, five grandchildren: Jeffrey (Clotilde Lemarie) Thomson, Karen Weitemeyer, Theresa (Chad) Leishman, James (Nicole) Thomson, Robert Weitemeyer and four great- grandchildren: Kendra and Edithe Leishman, Isidore Thomson Lemarie and Xyla Thomson. Also survived by her sister Josie (Alfred) Schott and brother Nick Wenig, nephew Fred Schott and by relatives and friends. A Celebration of Lisl's life will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at Arbor Chapel, Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14660 72 Ave. Surrey. All will remember her for her dignity, determination and devotion to her family.
