Rodney Woodward Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Oct. 8, 2016.
Rodney William Woodward September 22, 1944 - September 27,2016 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Rod Woodward. He died suddenly & peacefully after a long battle with dementia September 27, 2016. He was ushered home by heavenly Angels to enter through the pearly gates. No more pain! He will be happy and busy in his new life with God.

He is loved & will be missed by his wife Kay, son Tod (Stephanie; grandsons Brendan & Dylan), daughter Carilena Ewart (grandsons Marshall & Jacob), brother Doug (Donelda; nephew Brent & niece Krista), brother-in-law Jim Whitacre(Kathryn; nephew Timothy(dec), nieces Karyn & Elizabeth(dec), sister-in-law Vanessa Whitacre (Colin), brother-in-law John Whitacre(dec) (Genevieve; nephew Chris & niece Stephanie) and many friends.

Rod was born in Vancouver BC to William & Belle Woodward. He graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He was fortunate to have a 12 year career with the CFL.

He played for Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Hamilton. He was a 3 time CFL East Division All-Star & member of Ottawa's Grey Cup Champion teams in 1973 & 1976. After retiring from football, Rod was head of the BC Amateur Football Association & then became Head Football coach at Simon Fraser University for 3 seasons. His entrepreneurial spirit led him through a 15 year career with Investors Group.

Rod's enthusiasm & passion for life was contagious to everyone he met, coached or spoke to. He will be remembered as a man who brought us all together whether it was at a Rook tournament, Church softball game, or gathering together in fellowship. The memories we share will forever bring joy, love & laughter to our hearts. "To God be the Glory".

A big thanks to the doctors & staff at Peace Arch Hospital Oceanside for their support & for taking such good care of Rod. A heartfelt thanks to all the first responders for their compassion & sense of humor & for being dementia friendly.

A celebration of Rod's life will be held Monday, October 17, 2016 @ 1pm, Broadway Church, 2700 E. Broadway, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers we ask that you make a donation to the Rod Woodward Memorial Foundation.

So many wonderful memories from the first time we met your family at Broadway Church to playing on your softball team for several years, all the competitive rook games, and even after we moved to California when you and a group of friends came to visit us. Rod and the guys went down to the creek by the golf course looking for lost balls and he came back with his pockets stuffed, muddy from head to toe. I wouldn't even let him in until he changed clothes out on the patio.

We are sorry we won't be able to be there for Rod's Celebration of Life service, but we will be celebrating with him some day in Heaven for eternity.

Love and prayers for Kay and family.

The first time I met Rod and Kay was at a Christmas party at The Keg. I LOVED his goofy sense of humor!

Rod was a warm and friendly. Our children remember him tucking them into bed and telling them stories and then he told them "don't let the bedbugs bite!'. That gave my kids something to think about. They were both so sorry to hear of his passing. He was so very dear. Bless your precious family during this time of grief.
