Ian died peacefully on March 16, 2013, at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his father William, his sister Janet Anne, and his Uncle John. He is predeceased by his dear mother Nan. Stirl, as he was known to everyone, grew up in Vancouver. After graduating from Gladstone High School, he attended UBC where he became a proud brother of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He followed his father into law, practicing for over thirty years at Guild Yule & Co. before retiring to care for his ailing parents. A good athlete in his younger years until his knees failed him, Stirl remained an avid sports fan. He revered Manchester United of the English Premier League and made sure to attend football matches whenever he visited the old country. For many years he held four season tickets to the Canucks. Friends and colleagues were regularly invited to join him for dinner and a game. Sometimes he would be spotted at the Pacific Coliseum accompanying three female members of the law firm, who became affectionately known as "Stirl's girls." All who knew him will remember Stirl as a respected lawyer with a wry sense of humour. At Stirl's request, no service will be held.
