Romuald Lakowski

Romuald Lakowski July 5, 1926 - November 1 , 2013 Dr.Lakowski, Romuald passed away on November 1st , 2013 in Vancouver, BC at the age of 87. Predeceased by son, Edward, and great-grandsons, Emmett and Ford. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Isabel, 15 children: Romuald (Meg), Barbara (Jim), Leonard (Rhonda), Isabel (John), Paul (Shelimar), Gregory (Liz), Leonora (Marc), Matthew, Dorothea (John), Conrad, Marissa (Randy), Bernard (Bronwyn), Adrian (Jeanne), Veronica and Theodore (Margot). He is also survived by 41 grandchildren, 9 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews in the UK and Australia. Special thank-you to the doctors, nurses and staff at VGH.Ronnie, as he was commonly known, was born in Swiecie, Poland on July 5th, 1926. During the Second World War he became a member of the Polish Free Forces and eventually found himself situated in Great Britain where his knowledge of Polish, Russian, German and English made him a valuable translator for the British Army. After the war he studied at the University of Glasgow where he met his wife, Isabel. He earned a PhD at the University of Edinburgh and in 1970 emigrated to Vancouver where he taught in both the Psychology and Ophthalmology departments at the University of British Columbia. His research in colour vision established the link between changes in colour vision and the onset of diabetic retinopathy. He retired from UBC in 1991.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Thursday, November 7th at Immaculate Conception Church, 3776 W 28th Ave Vancouver with Father Paul Smith OFM as celebrant. Interment to follow at the Gardens of Gethsemani, 15800 32nd Ave., Surrey. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
