Alan PLUMTREE Obituary

Passed away suddenly on November 5, 2020. Beloved husband of Diana for 61 years, loving father and grandfather of Rebecca (Jim) and their children Katherine and John, and Jonathan (Clare) and their children Evan and Tessa. He is survived by his siter Barbara in the UK. Alan was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Born in Lincolnshire, England in 1936, he received his B.Sc. in Metallurgy at the University of Nottingham in 1960. He continued there for his PhD. During which time he lectured at Nottingham Trent University. On completion of his doctorate programme he and Diana emigrated to Canada accepting an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Toronto. In 1965 he moved to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo. Professor Plumtree served in many capacities at UW including Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, and Research Senator, and member of the Board of Governors. His major interests were in the relationship between the mechanical properties of materials and their microstructure composition and heat treatment. He was the author of more than 200 scientific and technical publications. For his achievements Alan was awarded the Doctor of Science degree from the University of Nottingham in 1997. He is known internationally as the co-designer and developer of the Waterloo Pump which provides potable water to villages in developing countries around the world. Alan and Diana loved international travel which took them to many countries including most of Europe and the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, Egypt, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Tahiti and New Caledonia. Alan was a keen follower of Premier League soccer but on summer weekends the countryside beckoned and day trips around Ontario with a picnic lunch at hand were simple pleasures he enjoyed. Alans family would like to extend special thanks to the first responders who were with Alan to the end and all the caregivers and PSWs who have helped him over the past year. The Plumtree family will receive friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 2-5pm and 7-9pm. Professor Plumtree was an enormous supporter during my years at Waterloo. He recognized that I would freeze in an examination and decided to give me an oral exam which I passed. During my student days I came to know him and his wife, Diana as wonderful role models. He was indeed a distinguished man.

I will be always grateful to Alan for his generous support and great leadership. When I was a new, junior faculty member in the materials group, I went to him for help about teaching ME230. He gave me lots of useful tips and let me sit in his classes to watch how he was teaching. Also, Alan encouraged and spent hours walking me through the CRC nomination process, which had enormous impact on my research career. Alan was very kind and incredibly humorous as well. I heard from one of his visiting researchers that Alan would often “smuggle” out a can of pop from the faculty gatherings for them. He rigorously explained to me a few times why and how a muffin would taste differently when dipping into coffee.

Dear Diana and Family

Our sincere condolences about the passing of Alan . I knew him to be a dedicated and innovative engineer ,he had a kind and uplifting personality. I enjoyed our conversations regarding English football and the likely hood off Forest ever playing in the Premier League again.
We wish you and your family all the strength and compassion in the time to come.

I am extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Plumtree. He was a much beloved professor during my time at Waterloo.
I went back to campus in June of 2019 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of my graduation. During the festivities, I happened to spot Professor Plumtree, and managed to speak with him for a few minutes. It felt to me like it might feel when meeting an icon.
It was our class who devised the idea of recognizing his heritage just before a Materials Science final exam. We visited a local Legion and got them to agree to let us borrow their large portrait of the Queen. Somebody dug up a recording of “God save the Queen”. Then, just before the exam papers were handed out in the Graphics Lab, we had the Queen’s portrait displayed in the front of the room, and everyone stood up while God Save the Queen was played.
When I spoke with Professor Plumtree last year, he was ever the gentleman, and graciously claimed to remember me. That short time speaking with him was easily the highlight of my entire day.
Most sincere condolences to the Plumtree family for your loss.

Don McInnes, P. Eng., Mechanical Engineering 1979.
