Gilmore C. Smith(1923 - 2013)

Gilmore C. Smith, 90, 21 South Penn Hall Drive, Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Penn Hall at Menno Haven Home.
He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Mont Alto, Pa., the son of the late Paul R. and Alma Cluck Smith.
A longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, Pa., he was an active member and served the church in many capacities.
He graduated from Quincy High School in 1941 and served as chairman of many class reunions.
Mr. Smith served for three years in the US Army's 27th Engineer construction Battalion during World War II. His last two years were spent in the South Pacific, Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
He enrolled at Penn State Mont Alto in 1946 and graduated from Penn State (main campus) in 1950. He was also a graduate of the Purdue Life Insurance Marketing Institute in 1951. Mr. Smith and his late wife Gloria Cotner Smith were married in 1947. He started working for the Social Security Administration in 1956 and retired as District Manager in Chambersburg in 1983. He had worked in Allentown, Lancaster and Johnstown before being transferred to Chambersburg in 1976.
Mr. Smith helped organize and was a charter member and Past President of the Penn State Alumni Association of Franklin County. He was a Life Member of the Penn State University Alumni Association. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1599, American Legion and BPO Elks lodge 600 all in Chambersburg.
Masonic affiliations included over 65 years with Acacia Lodge 856, Waynesboro, PA, AASR Consistory and Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg, Scottish Rite clubs in Waynesboro, Shippensburg and Valley Forest 145, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Mr. Smith was a member and Past President of the Chambersburg Noon Lions Club. He was a longtime member of Meals-on-Wheels Board and a volunteer worker for over 25 years. He was a former Board member of the Quincy United Methodist Home, a long time Board member and volunteer for the Chambersburg Community Concert Association, as well as a Board member of the Chambersburg Community Centers Inc. He was a life member and Past President of AARP, Falling Spring Chapter 2840. He was a member and emcee for the AARP Choir.
Mr. Smith is survived by a son Gary Smith and his fiance Linda Stone of Dover, Pa., two daughters; Pamela Becker and her husband Terry of Quarryville, Pa., Sandra Deaner and her husband Dave of Gettysburg, Pa., four grandchildren; Megan Barto and her husband Neil of Lititz, Pa., Michael Deaner and his wife Katie of Drexel Hill, Pa., Scott Becker and his wife Nicole of Silver Spring, Md., and Eric Deaner of Gettysburg, Pa., three great grandchildren; Samantha Barto, Emma Deaner and Caitlyn Becker, and two brothers; Galen Smith of Cummings, Ga., and Karl Smith of Quincy, Pa.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. from Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, Pa., with Rev. Chuck Deshong officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
