Howard L. "Jake" Roland, 82, of Greencastle, Pa., passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
Born July 23, 1931, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Minnie Mae Roland.
Mr. Roland was a graduate of Mercersburg High School with the Class of 1950.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War
from 1951 to 1955.
He and his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Genevieve L. "Jenny" (Stoler) Roland, were married May 19, 1961, in Hagerstown. They had lived at 375 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, before moving to their present residence in 2005.
Mr. Roland was employed at Armco Steel and Sunnyway Foods, both of Greencastle. He retired in 1992.
He was a member of Solomon's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg, Pa., life member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW
Post 6319 and member of Rescue Hose Co. Fire Police, both of Greencastle, Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro and National AARP.
Mr. Roland enjoyed traveling, cruising and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Todd L. Roland of Greencastle and Troy L. Roland and his wife, Teresa of Texas; two granddaughters, Chelsey Clark and Brianna Roland; a sister, Evelyn Zeis of Mercersburg; a brother James W. "Bill" Roland of Mercersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, with the Rev. Peter Emig officiating. Burial will follow in Macedonia Church Cemetery, Greencastle, where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
