Kathryn G. (Sanders) Bakner, 82, of 612 Fairview Ave., Waynesboro, died 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born May 18, 1931, in Fairfield, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Vincent J. and Viola (O'Toole) Sanders. She was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.
Mrs. Bakner attended Waynesboro High School and then graduated from cosmetology school in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She and her husband of over 62 years, J. William "Bill" Bakner, were married on Dec. 22, 1951, in St. Andrew Catholic Church, Waynesboro. They moved to their present residence in 1960.
Mrs. Bakner owned and operated Bakner's Beauty Salon in Waynesboro for 20 years. She also served as a cashier at Summitview Elementary School for 20 years, retiring in 1993.
She was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the Women Society of the church. She was also a member of the Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, Franklin County Easter Seals, and the National AARP.
Mrs. Bakner enjoyed working on crafts, especially painting. She also enjoyed playing cards, music, playing the organ, volunteering at Quincy United Methodist Home, and volunteering at the Waynesboro Hospital.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Andrew J. Bakner and his wife, Veryll of Waynesboro; her daughter-in-law, Darlene K. Bakner of Waynesboro; two grandchildren, Alison Johnston of Greencastle and Timothy Bakner of Waynesboro; three great-grandsons, Nicholas Johnston, Adam Johnston, and Timothy Bakner; five sisters, Margaret Sprankle of Baltimore, Maryland, Lois Canter of Hollywood, Maryland, Marie Sanders of Baltimore, Bernadette Runk of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Aileen Zeigler of Waynesboro; three brothers, Donald Sanders of Waynesboro, Eugene Sanders of Virginia, and Vincent Sanders of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert C. Bakner who died on Oct. 10, 2004; one daughter, Rita Ann Bakner who died in 1954; one sister, Helen Clugston; and two brothers, Paul Sanders and Richard Sanders.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, in St. Rita's Catholic Church, 13219 Monterey Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, with Rev. Robert Malagesi officiating. Burial will be private in Quincy Cemetery, Quincy, Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, where a Rosary and a prayer service will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
