Michael L. Hays, 59, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, died Friday, May 9, 2014, in the Mertitus Medical Center, Hagerstown, Maryland.
Born March 17, 1955, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Mike was the second of seven children born to Lorraine E. (Weishaar) Hays of Cascade, Maryland, and the late Elden E. Hays.
He graduated from Smithsburg High School with the class of 1973. He later graduated from Hagerstown Junior College with an Electrical Engineering Technology degree.
Mike worked as the Senior Electronics Technician at Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, for over 30 years. His expertise took him overseas on several occasions.
Mike was a very gifted jack of all trades. He could literally fix anything. He mastered any discipline in which he took an interest and then very generously shared his abilities with others. He was his family's go-to guy. Whenever there was a friend in need, Mike was there to help. He will be sorely missed by those blessed to have known him.
A very active member of his community, Mike proudly served with the Blue Ridge Fire Department as both a Fireman and as an EMT for many years. He served two terms as President with his local Blue Ridge Summit chapter of the Lions Club. He was instrumental in building the current playground sponsored by the Club and was the chief cook for all the Club steak feeds for over eight years.
He was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, where he served as a lector and money counter. Other memberships include the Cascade American Legion 239 and the Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, the joy of his life, Ashley M. Hays of Nashville, Tennessee; four brothers, Elden E. Hays Jr. of Glendale, Arizona, John P. Hays and his wife, Catherine of Hagerstown, James W. Hays of Cascade, and Joseph A. Hays and his wife, Kristine of Cascade; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Angela Hays and Rebecca Ellen Hays.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, in St. Rita's Catholic Church 13219 Monterey Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, with Rev. Robert Malagesi officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Fairfield, Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends in the church one hour prior to the services Thursday afternoon.
